Down in the town by the butcher's shop door, sat Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy . . .With a big juicy bone, Hairy Maclary sets off for the dairy. His friends want him to share it but Hairy Maclary has other ideas!
Dame Lynley Dodd is an internationally celebrated writer for children whose titles are highly regarded and much loved by her readers in New Zealand and around the world. Her stories are known for their lively sound qualities, curious animal characters, and the memorable illustrations that accompany the text. Lynley has received numerous awards, both for her writing and illustration, and in 2002 she was made a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to children’s literature.
I had been thinking for a while that I needed some Hairy Maclary in my life - I've always loved this series, by one of New Zealand's best known children's authors! As I was reading this in a cafe in Reefton, I don't have a copy to show the beautiful artwork & can't give examples of Dodd's economical yet descriptive language. Young children never tire of these books.
This tale is about the crafty Hairy McLary receiving a bone from the local butcher - which he doesn't want to share with his friends!
Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy gets a massive, tasty bone from butcher Samuel Stone. HM grabs it and dashes off for home to eat his bone in peace and quiet.
But his friends, Hercules Morse, Bottomley Potts, Muffin McLay, Bitzer Maloney and Schnitzel von Krumm and are all hungry and are sniffing around HM with his bone. They begin to follow him home.
HM is blissfully unaware that his friends are after him and his bone. But fortunately for HM, obstacles along the way knock each dog in turn out of the chase. For instance, Hercules Morse gets stuck trying to get through a hole in a sign board, Muffin McLay is unable to get under a hedge, Bottomley Potts gets caught up in a net in a fishing yard, Blitzer Maloney stumbles on a stony building site and Schnitzel von Krumm, a dachshund with a very low tum, is unable to jump over a wall that HM clears with ease.
This leaves Hairy Maclary free to trot safely home and have ALL of his bone to himself.
Lovely illustrations by the author and an excellent Hairy Maclary adventure, made for children of ALL ages!
I LOVE this one! Bouncy rhythm begging to be read aloud, and awesome names for the dogs. Also, a more preachy, sentimental author would have had Hairy share his bone and discover the joys of sharing, but there is something satisfying to letting the little guy enjoy ***ALL*** of his bone.

I really enjoy children books. And read them to my kids every night. But one thing I don't do it review them. Why I don't know, but I decided it was time to start.
There isn't a book by Lynley Dodd I dislike. I mean seriously they are so funny! The original book is a classic that every person on the planet knows! Always recommending this author for children's books.

This would have been not as much fun had we not read Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy first which introduced all the other characters. It is a little more fun than that one, though, since the story is less about introductions and more about Hairy's big bone and how he's going to get away from all its admirers.
I have read more than enough Hairy Maclary books. That said they are all different enough to know that Lynley Dodd is a real author not a machine. All of them are cute, and children seem to like all of them. In this one Hairy Maclary has a bone which every other dog in the neighbourhood wants. Hairy is not so keen to share.
Hairy Maclary goes to the butcher's shop and gets given a bone, but he's followed home by a gang of dogs who're desperate to take his spoils from him. I loved how simple this story was, but the ways that some of the dogs got separated from the pack had me giggling. This is definitely one of the best Hairy Maclary books!
"Hairy Maclary's Bone," by Lynley Dodd is another installment in the Hairy Maclary series, following the beloved dog from Donaldson's Dairy. In this rhyming story, Hairy is given a big bone by the butchers and followed by other dogs including Hercules Morse, Bottomley Potts, and Schnitzel von Krumm. Hairy is not too keen on sharing, and illudes the other dogs in various ways.
I adore this book for its bouncy rhymes and catchy phrases, although I have ranked it a four instead of a five because nothing compares to the original Hairy Maclary. This is a great book for beginning readers! In the classroom, this book could be used in a lesson on figurative language and rhyming- how do rhythm and rhyme add to a story? In the lowest grades, this book would make a great read-aloud staple. The teacher would read this story once a month while students eat snacks (making this an event to look forward to) while this story is read. Each month, students would become better at following the words on the page and reading, making them more enthusiastic. Perhaps students could create their own Hairy Maclary character and make a poem about him for an assignment.
Down in the town by the butcher's shop door, sat Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy. Out of the door came Samuel Stone. He gave Hairy Maclary his tastiest bone. Then off up the street on scurrying feet, on his way to the dairy went Hairy Maclary.
And chasing him home, with their eyes on the bone, went Hercules Morse, Bottomley Potts, Muffin McLay, Bitzer Maloney and Schnitzel von Krumm with the very low tum. Hungrily sniffing and licking their chops, they followed him up past the school and the shops.
Hairy Maclary was able to give all his friends the slip on the way home. So at last he was free to go home on his own, Hairy Maclary with ALL of his bone.
Another delightful escapade that will have little ones chuckling at Hairy Maclary and his wily ways.
I was read this book in school by a Year 2 pupil, who seemed to thoroughly enjoy the story from start to finish. A very engaging book with useful illustrations as they engage the reader even further. The prominent element of rhyme throughout was an interesting point raised by the pupil and how the book frequently follows the same rhyming pattern throughout. This emphasised the acknowledgment of linguistic techniques by the child and they were express their views on the use of rhyme. In addition, I also found the variety of adjectives throughout the book fantastic, as they allowed the children to build on their prior knowledge of terms to describe something/someone/an object.
Rediscovered this just now, can't remember far back enough to know how I felt about it as a kid. Unlike the first book which introduced the dogs here, now there is a story, a plot about Hairy MacLary trying to keep his bone away from the other dogs. This picturebook is about a dog that keeps his bone and all the other dogs get stuck trying to follow him. I guess metaphorically the moral of the story is that dogs (and people) are all made differently, such that if you have a desire or a prize, so long as you keep walking wherever suits you, you will win.
...It's also just an adorable kids book about dogs!
Dog gets given a bone and manages to keep it from the other dogs by taking a rather convoluted journey home. The names of the dogs are imaginative and the rhymes ensure the story has a great rhythm. You have to wonder why hairy maclary was chosen to have the butcher’s best bone. What made him so special? Is the dairy in cahoots with the butcher? Or is he just a demanding dog?
Always loved reading these book with my children & now introducing them to my 3 yr nephew. The rhyming across the pages, with the fantastic names, is great fun for young ones. These stories last across the generations.
The ending threw me off guard that it was Hairy’s plan all along not to share. Not a good model behaviour is it? But Hairy is forgiven for wanting that juicy bone all for himself because he naughty like that.
A delightful little escapade with Hairy Maclary and all of his friends - with a true laugh-out-loud moment at the end. The rhythm and rhyme of these books is so readable and lovable - for young and old!
Wasn't our favorite. Found it kind of awkward to read. Too many different dogs, hard to keep track of their names and who they were in this short book.
Hairy Maclary receives a bone but he is not the only dog in town that would like to chew on it. Less repetitive than the first book with a neat little concept.
Book #2 of the Hairy Maclary series and the 6th that I have read, and this is again entertaining, and humorous in its little length. It is amazing how such short books can be so memorable.
