This is a novel anthology featuring the best Filipino talents in both horror and graphic fiction. If you’ve been following Philippine comics the last few years, this book has your favorite creators. This is an interesting experiment by Summit Media two years ago and it is too bad there isn’t a follow up project. This features four short stories and it is done in color. Here are the capsule reviews of the stories.

The Sim by Gerry Alanguilan tells this dark tale of being in the wrong place at the wrong time and it is done in an almost personal way. Alanguilan’s strength is in relating his scripts to personal experience. The coloring cleans most of the extra lines from his art hinting of a European influence.

Judas Kiss, with script by David Hontiveros and Budjette Tan and featuring art by Oliver Pulumbarit, is a tale of love, lust and revenge, themes that evoke an EC horror comic feel. Pulumbarit’s art is very visceral and utilizes color with his storytelling.

Katumbas by Hontiveros and Ian Sta. Maria is horror with a superhero flavor. It retells an ancient myth to fit modern sensibilities.

The Clinic by Tan and Kajo Baldisimo is my favorite of the bunch. The acclaimed team from the Trese graphic novels team up on a story that answers the question, what if a creature from Philippine mythology decides to open a beauty clinic. This is the best art I’ve seen from the artist. I just love how the way the colors clean up his line work and the vibrant palette he chose. He can definitely draw beautiful women, as well as terrible monsters.

Though this can be an excellent Halloween reading, it can be an great sampler for where modern Filipino comics are now. I’ve been to local comic conventions and saw the manga style done to death, but these artists can do a realistic style coupled with dynamic panels. It is something to be excited about Filipino comics.

Underpass is a graphic novel anthology penned and drawn by different Filipino comic book writers and artists. It is a thin volume of four horror / dark fantasy stories which I fervently wish would start a series, but unfortunately Summit Media never followed it up.

No internet connection works wonder when you have piles of unread books... (2nd book this evening)

Underpass is a collection of 4 hair raising comic stories... I made a mistake reading it in the unholy hour of the night. But I have already stepped into the underpass, there is no turning back.

Sim will tame your curiousity. Judas kiss will make ung cringe. Katumbas (my fave story) will make you want to hear more. The clinic made me doubt those clinics 😅😱.

Timely read for horror week.

This is actually a re-read.

The first time I read it is because of a recommendation from a high school friend and classmate. He talks to Budjette Tan as much as he wishes to and he supported this graphic anthology.

What I liked the most is the last story. Next is the story of the setting - underpass. I may emphasize these two stories for I am a fan of Kajo's drawings and Ian's representations of the stories. They are such great illustrators. In addition, a different perspective of pinoy folklore was crafted by Budjette... making it more intriguing (in The Clinic they manananggals don't have to hunt. They simply have a ready-made recipe prepared on their plate).

I reread this to prep myself up with a full chapter of Kadasig's adventures. And I can't wait. :)

UNDERPASS by Gerry Alanguilan, David Hontiveros, Budgette Tan, Oliver Pulumbarit, Ian Sta. Maria, and Kajo Baldisimo.
.
This is a great way to sum up my graphic novel reads for #wikathon2020 because this is an anthology of 4 spooky Filipino comics by the said awesome komikeros.
.
The Sim follows the story of a haunted sim card that is a fun yet creepy storytelling.
.
Judas Kiss is a story of a man being haunted by this ghost who rapes him anywhere and anytime. Yep trigger warning there.
.
Katumbas follows the suicide stories lurking in the haunted underpass in Metro Manila.
.
Lastly, The Clinic is a of how celebrities would go through lengths just to be in shape and keep their stardom.
.
These ofcourse features Filipino mythology and superstition that marks them as Pinoy from page 1-end.
.
Underpass is a collection of perfect stories to tell in the dark in one of your sleepovers!
A solid 5/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for the creativity and ingenuity of these comics. After indulging to many graphic novels this month, I can’t help but to wonder what have I been doing in the past that I haven’t read these before the lockdown and Comic-events are still a thing to attend and enjoy in person.

This is a beautiful introduction to the world of Philippine Ghost Stories featuring some of the best Filipino graphic artists and writers, and my personal favorite Sir Gerry Alanguilan.

It saddens me that this masterpiece is being sold at a very cheap price of PHP25 despite its valuable content and glossy, fully colored pages which makes it vulnerable to scalpers online. Frankly, if I had irl comic book lover friends I would gladly give them a copy of this book because it deserves to be appreciated by a much larger audience than just those who have access to Booksale stores in their area

Long live Sir Gerry and Filipino Comic Book Industry.

I am so grateful I found a discounted copy of this anthology on Booksale! Composed of 4 stories, with different art styles and storytelling, it was a good experience generally, as all tries to deliver a good mystery.

Sim is okay, as is Katumbas. Judas Kiss is my favorite just because it managed to incorporate a lot of plot twists with just a few pages, and it has a great storytelling style. The Clinic, I also enjoyed because it has references from the Trese comics.

It's nice to read a graphic novel written by Filipinos. I give this book 2 stars mainly because it isn't just my taste. I may have expected something scarier from the different stories. I think other people will find the book intriguing and haunting.

4 horror short stories / graphic novellas (?), each one has their own style of drawing. A must-read if you're new to our local graphic novel / comics environment. A must-have if you collect comics, as this one is a who's who of modern Filipino comics.

Going through the network of streets, highways, and avenues in the urban landscape becomes similar to navigating a maze where houses, buildings, open spaces, and people turn into obstructions that throw a person off as they make their way from one place to another. In between, there are liminal spaces--spaces or structures that fall in between coming and going, which includes bridges and underpasses. The space in focus is designed to allow citizens to have a seamless and untroubled walk from one side of the road to another at any time of the day.

But when night comes, and people have gone home, these places become rife with crime and the supernatural, in which the work anchors on. Part of it reminded me of the "Trese" series, a brilliant collection which uses Filipino mythological creatures in a modern setting. I docked off one point because long form comics are interesting to read through and I wish that this was a longer work.

Underpass is one of the early anthologies made in order to get the attention of anyone who loves paranormal stories to explore the local comics.

The scariest story for me is Judas Kiss made by Hontiveros, Tan and Pulumbarit. It gives that creepy feeling of someone may be standing by your door while you sleep or resting on top of a branch while you take a shade from the sun. It draws fear due to the suspense given through expecting a terrifying event bound to happen any moment.

This anthology made up of 4 paranormal stories in comic form are greatly done. It is a nice stepping stone that gives us a view on how our local paranormal themed comics are shaped. Each one is crafted to suit the ride you may be looking for.
