This was a very inspirational story. It's amazing what this man endured, but he never seemed to complain. As I was reading this I kept feeling guilty for all the times I have complained over little things, and the times I felt like my life was so horrible. My problems are nothing compared to what this man has gone through. Many of the things he said in this book were great. I would recommend this book to anyone.
I loved this book until the end. I have to admit it feel flat for me and left me feeling disappointed. I’m not sure what I’m disappointed in. It was simply his experience and I don’t want him to alter it or change it to make a good story but it felt glossed over or vague or hurried, I’m not sure. I was sad to read of some of his choices. It was beautiful though to hear that he clung to the lessons of love for humanity that he gained through his tragic circumstances. My favorite part of the book was meeting his parents and getting to know them through him. They touched my heart and instilled a fresh desire in me to continue giving my all to my children. I hope that Ahmed has found someone to help him fully heal from the trauma that was so cruelly inflicted upon him. I wish him peace and love. I honor him and thank him for sharing his story and helping us to understand that we are all more alike than different. We are all Gods children.
This book was a difficult read because of the torture these people had to endure but I felt amazed at the charity they showed each other. I was fascinated by the story until the last three chapters. I felt the author let the reader down. It was like she was tired of writing so she said this and this and this happened the end. I didn't think the ending was developed enough and the main character's integrity seemed to suffer for it. I wanted to hear more about the strength he had developed because of the trials he went through. It was kind of like letting the air out of a baloon instead of watching it float through the air.
This was an eye opening book and talks about the brutality of the beating he suffered at the hands of the kaHD during the Russian invasion of Afganistan. However he brings about a story of hope, enduring and facing challenges head on. Would recommend but only if you can handle reading about some tourture
I read this because it was co-written by Dorothy Keddington, but was disappointed. It is an interesting story, but also depressing, especially the end. I felt so sorry for the man for most of the book, but the ending made me just sad for the waste, and almost angry with his choices.

A very interesting story of an Afghan prisioner of war. Very hunbling to read of his confinement and torture but exciting to know that he now can truly appreciate the freedoms and opportunities of our wonderful country. I would love to have a more current update on him.
I read this book many years ago. The author is a friend of a friend. I really enjoyed reading the book and hearing his personal accounts of his life as well.
