William R. Bright was an American evangelist. In 1951 at the University of California, Los Angeles, he founded Campus Crusade for Christ as a ministry for university students. In 1952 he wrote The Four Spiritual Laws. In 1979 he produced the film Jesus. In 1996 Bill Bright was awarded the $1.1 million Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion, and donated the money to promote the spiritual benefits of fasting and prayer. In 2001 he stepped down as leader of the organization and Steve Douglass became president.
I found this book to be very convicting. Some of the personal testimonies are astounding (one woman's sister, an alcoholic, was delivered of several demons; a church in Modesto, CA, saw thousands of conversions in a short span of time). Other stories took me back to the mid-90s, when revivals were breaking out on college campuses. My school, East Texas Baptist University, was a small part of that. I'll always have great memories of the BSM Prayer Team and our times of fellowship, praying and fasting, and the sometimes incredible answers to prayer that we experienced.
I'm so glad I stumbled upon this book! It opened my eyes to the possibility of an extended fast, something I had never considered before. Through these accounts, I saw that it is possible, and I want to try it someday!
Update: I reread this before returning it to the person I had borrowed it from. I did complete a 40 day juice/broth fast back in 2020. I’m currently doing a 21 day 1-meal-a-day fast with my church but I’d like to attempt another extended fast in the new year.
