My kids don’t quite get the acrostics yet😜, but they get the alphabet and love the pictures. It’s a sweet collection of summer time moments.

Watch my kiddo’s ABC time and other recommended books.

Ages: 2 - 8

Content Considerations: nothing to note.

With each review, I provide Content Considerations, mentioning any objectionable content I come across so that parents and/or conscientious readers (like me) can determine beforehand whether they want to read a book or not. Content surprises are super annoying, especially when you’re 100+ pages in, so here’s my attempt to help you avoid that!

If you’re considering a book or looking for a new title to read, check out my highly categorized shelves, read my reviews and Friend or Follow me to spiff up your feed with clean, wholesome, living books.

I have an Instagram account that’s pretty bookishly unique too!

A great alphabet book that uses acrostics to walk readers through the alphabet. A good book for use when introducing acrostics and word selection.

I enjoyed reading this ABC book. The book goes through the letters of the alphabet and, using acrostics, talks about different aspects of summer, like picnics and beaches. Each letter and word used to represent that letter has its own page in the book and an illustration to go along with it. Each illustration takes up a majority of the page and has a black border drawn around it. The illustrations contain lots of detail about whatever is being discussed and the illustrator uses vivid colors to make the pictures stand out. The text is included somewhere in the illustration which contains the acrostic of whatever letter and word that is being discussed. The text is in its own block with a white background and a black border. The first letter at the beginning of each line is a teal color while the rest of the text is black. I find the text and the illustrations to be very visually appealing in this book. I do not think this book would be the best to use in early elementary grades, K-2, because some of the words used in this book might be too advanced for these grades. However, I think this could be a great book to use in 3-6 for lessons on acrostics.

This book goes through using acrostics poems to tell a story of summer and summer activities. There is no real sequence in this story, it is more like 26 separate pictures and poems. The words each page spells out goes in alphabetical order. For example, it starts off with the word "awning" then goes to "kelp" ending with "zodiac". The images used in the book are very simple but elegant with details when you look at the colors and line work. This book I would recommend this to kids that have a wide vocabulary or that are wanting to learn some new words since it uses some complex(not everyday) words like gleaming, incandescent, and a few others. Overall though I would recommend this book to 3rd grade and up. You could use this to introduce poems by having the students listen to this book while reading it aloud. The students could after get assigned different letters, in groups or alone, and make their own acrostic poem and have them draw a picture to go along with it.

I absolutely LOVE this seasonal set of alphabets!! The acrostic style of poetry is eternally delicious, I love seeing how Schnur interprets a word as more than the basis of its definition. The nostalgia captured in the charming woodcut art style by Evans is perfect since I'm reading these as an adult, and it emotionally takes me back to the best parts of every season. And I love that ever acrostic is a real word, and I generally get to learn something new by the time X comes around in each book! (Xeric, for summer, means incredibly dry, with very little moisture!) My favorite for summer though, was Idle!

Here's a favorite older book, one of four seasonal books by Steven Schnur all with gorgeous woodcut illustrations by Leslie Evans. I get these out every season to enjoy, love the acrostic poems that celebrate special things of the season. Daisy, Flags, Grapes, and Picnic are some of the topics Schnur writes about. If you don't know these books, find them!

What a fun idea! I would love the challenge of trying to write a similar thing on my own.
