Helen Wells
94 books75 followersOriginal name: Helen Weinstock. Social worker turned full-time young adult writer, born in Illinois but moved with family to New York City when she was seven. In 1934 Wells graduated from New York University [where she'd been the first female editor of the literary quarterly], with a major in philosophy and a minor in sociology and psychology.
During World War II, she served as a volunteer with the State Department's Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs, escorting Latin American visitors in the United States.
Author of Cherry Ames, Nurse books, a series for young teens.
She was also the author of the Vicki Barr books, about a young mystery-solving flight attendant. And, as Francine Lewis, she penned the short-lived Polly French series (1950s), aimed at a younger readership.
After writing the first eight books of the Cherry Ames series and the first three Vicki Barr books, Wells decided to abandon both series to write for television and radio, and Julie Tatham took over (however, both the ninth Cherry Ames book and the fourth Vicki Barr book were published under Wells's name). Tatham later returned the Vicki Barr books to Wells in 1953 and the Cherry Ames books in 1955.

Helen Wells’ Cherry Ames Nursing Series is an enjoyable and exciting read for all ages. I reviewed each book 1-4 separately and loved them all!
- book 1- Cherry Ames Student Nurse - where it begins
- book 2- Cherry Ames Senior Nurse- finishing school
- book 3- Cherry Ames Army Nurse- WW 2 and the class enlist together.
- book 4- Cherry Ames Chief Nurse- helping the wounded on the island.
Returning characters and new with always some mischief by Cherry in a good way and always some mystery that Cherry discovers with others in each book.

I read these books years ago, mostly in my junior high years. I would have to wait at the library after school, until my mom got off work. I eead every Cherry Ames the library had, which was quite a few in the original series. In fact, the librarian was convinced I was going to be a nurse, lol! I loved Cheery and her adventures. Ive decided to read them again, plus the ones I never have. They are quite dated, of curse, but I still love reading them.

So happy
I read these books when I was little and loved them. I was so excited to see they became ebooks. My mom and grandma both read them when they were little too. My grandma gave her copies away to my grammar school and when they closed they pretty much threw away all of the books. Very boo.

I've read that Harry Potter books are in a genre called "boarding school", i.e. books about the coming of age that takes place away from home.
I loved Cherry Ames books when I was at the age that cherishes a series book. I preferred her to Bobbsey Twins, Happy Hollisters, Sweet Valley High, Nancy Drew, although I read those books too.
My favorite Cherry Ames books were the student nursing books, the books about her military career serving in WWII (fascinating period snapshot!) and Cherry Ames Visiting Nurse. I loved the opening convention where her nursing assigment was decided. I'm glad these books are still in print, I hope they don't change the WWII references or the nursing school references from the 30's. All of that dated material adds to the charm of the series.

Read these 1st 4 books on Kindle. So glad to be collecting the real books, cuz there's nothing quite as satisfying as reading a book...the feel and weight of it in my hand and the way it smells, the crackle of the turn of the pages.

I’ll let this set stand for all the ones I read, which was at least the first 20. I loved efficient Cherry Ames, solving mysteries in every new nursing job she took!
