Can Carlene really be remembering things from a past life?
Strange, fragmented memories have been haunting Carlene since she and her mother came to Lake Isadora. The vivid recollections don't seem to relate to anything in Carlene's own past. Until now, she hadn't even seen the place where Keith, the brother she never knew, disappeared during a storm fifteen years ago. Some think he drowned, but his mother thinks he was kidnapped and is still alive somewhere. She is sure the little boy's clothes that have just been found near the lake belonged to her son.
Carlene knows that her bizarre memories have something to do with Keith. They might even help her discover the truth about what happened the day he disappeared. But she can't possibly be remembering things that happened before she was born-unless the memories are from a past life.

Lake of Secrets by Lael Littke is a thrilling, mystery book, that I couldn't put down! Three years before Carlene was born her brother, Keith goes missing during a turbulent storm, while he was on a boat. Her mother still claims he's alive but others think he's dead. Shortly thereafter, Carlene's father runs away from despair. After the unfortunate disappearance of both her husband and son, and now she is pregnant with Carlene, she feels it would be best if she left town. Eighteen years later, Carlene's mother is still convinced that Keith is alive, especially when she reads the local paper that the police found boys clothes in an old mine. But not until after Carlene and her mom move back to the mysterious town, Carlene begins to get strange visions of Keith, however she wasn't even alive yet. I think that the author's message is as time goes on things heal. Since Carlene's mother did not find for over 18 years whether he was alive or not, she couldn't heal until she knew what happened to her son. I loved this book, the compassion, the excitement and the fear factor, all of these feelings kept my eyes wide open!
Lake of Secrets was a good mysterious book. Like the first book I read, A Solitary Blue, it is based around the idea of families. I liked the mystery of this book even though after awhile it got pretty predictable. As I read the book I became very frantic about what was going to happen next. It was always hard to withdraw from this book from all the suspense. It was a simply worded book which kept it from being all that great but it still had a great story behind it. When I first started reading the book it started to bewilder me with a lot of questions. I think the author’s purpose of this book was to entertain more than to leave a message like my last book but still emphasized the idea of families…as quoted “Families are Forever”. What i really liked most of all was how all the books that I have read this semester sort of tie in together just with different styles of writing.
In the book, “Lake of Secrets,” by Lael Littke, the main character, Carlene starts getting strange memories of things she has never seen, and places she’s never been once she comes to the town her brother had died. Carlene’s mom had been trying to figure out what had happened to him, still in hope that Keith was alive, almost enough to drive her crazy. When a little boys outfit had been discovered near the town of Lake Isadora, Carlene and her mom moved to the town to find him. However, after having many strange memories of Keith, whom she had never met, and being at the scene of his death, Carlene finds out these reoccurring remembrances are from a past life. Carlene uses these memories to figure out what really happened to her older brother, 3 years before she was born. The same memories constantly kept coming to Carlene, or Elaine, in her past life, and became stronger and intenser each time. In Lake Isadora, Carlene met and made friends as well. One, a young boy named J.P. , and her past life’s grandson, Luke. These two help her along the way, and make the situation easier. Carlene even meets her past life’s (Elaine’s) husband, Jonathan, who was also there the day, later to find out, Elaine and Keith died. Jonathan gives Carlene some of Elaine journals, and anything that would boost her memory. From the memories, she finds out Elaine and Jonathan had tried to save Keith from a mysterious person taking him, but didn’t succeed. This caused the drowning of Elaine and Keith. So who really was the person taking him? “Lake of Secrets” is a sad yet engaging mystery. It is an easy read that keeps you in the story. It is very enjoyable, and kept me turning the page. Littke uses the idea of having past lives to help the story go on in finding what happened to Keith with little evidence. He also uses the theme that ‘family is forever,’ as it is the first and last sentence of the book and only found throughout the story through the actions the characters made. Even though Carlene was afraid of what was happening to her, she never gave up. She knew that finding out what happened, would save her mother from her unresting, strangeness and save their relationship as well. Lake of Secrets is a book I would definitely recommend, as it is a sad story, the book remains light-hearted and entertaining.

Carlene’s family just moved back to Lake Isadora, the place where her brother Keith went missing fifteen years ago. Even though Carlene has never been to Lake Isadora, she begins to have memories of the place, and of things that happened there long ago.
The mystery of Keith’s disappearance is slowly revealed through Carlene’s visions of the past. Carlene tries to figure out where the visions come from, all while connecting with the players in Keith’s disappearance, to figure out if his death was an accident.
I liked this. It was a cozy with a supernatural element—well executed with this moody, Lake Isadora setting. It reminded me a bit of my friend Deb (a great writer)’s work. A solid supernatural mystery—I give it a 4.
With Lael Littke’s background in studying English and education she is able to write a book that students can enjoy reading by trying to figure out the mystery. Lake of Secrets is a mystery where a younger sister may know more about her brother’s disappearance then she thinks. When a new clue emerges Carlene’s mom insists on moving them back to Lake Isadora. Even though Carlene feels forgotten by her mother, she will still try to support her mom through finding her brother, Keith. Littke uses symbolism, epiphany, and central conflict to guide readers on Carlene’s journey. Throughout the novel, readers will learn how human connection can lead people to new discoveries. Carlene’s mother has been focused on Keith and his disappearance ever since before Carlene was born. Carlene starts having flashbacks of unknown events once they arrive at Lake Isadora. She says, “I didn’t remember the lake, which disoriented me even more” (Littke 6). Carlene meets Luke and Jonathan while she is there and they bring her closer to answering the question of why the flashbacks are happening. Readers will learn why Carlene is having the flashbacks throughout the story. Littke’s creative use of symbolism helps readers learn how human connection can lead to new discoveries. For instance, at the beginning of the book when Carlene and her mom arrive to the lake, Carlene’s mom asks her if she thinks it is pretty even though it is shrinking. She says, “The valley, I mean. I can’t believe the lake has shrunk down to practically nothing” (Littke 5). The lake symbolizes the hope they have of finding Keith. In the story, the daughter clearly has no interest in finding Keith, but the mom still has some hope. The lake can be compared to people having lost hope in finding Keith over the years because there is no new way to find him. Readers have no idea the connection they will find between Carlene and a person on the boat with Keith. When they realize what Carlene’s flashbacks mean they are able to piece together the story. By the end of the story, they realize that someone had found Keith’s body. Carlene describes it to her mom as, “He’d washed up on the rocks near her cabin” (Littke 200). At this point in the story, the lake is symbolizing someone letting go of Keith. At the end of the story, Carlene’s mom finally lets go of Keith and focuses on her child that is alive, Carlene. Her flashbacks allowed them to connect with someone else to find Keith. In the novel, the lake represents how they deal with losing Keith. In order for readers to find out what Carlene’s flashbacks represent, she has an epiphany about who she is connected to. Soon after Carlene gets the flashbacks she asks her mom when she had last been to Lake Isadora. Her mom answers with, “Never...Never in your whole life” (Littke 14). Littke’s emphasis on negative words like “never” and “whole life” it highlights how significant Carlene’s not being there really is. When readers find out that Carlene has never been to the lake they can infer that there is something or someone representing her at the lake. This allows readers to figure out how Carlene is connected to someone at the lake and who that person is. A minor character in the story, Mariah, is the one who actually connects the flashbacks with what happened to Keith. Mariah and Carlene are talking when Mariah realizes that she, “probably came back as Keith’s sister to- … let [them] know what happened to [her] brother” (Littke 81). Littke uses a pause in her writing so that readers understand that this is the epiphany moment. Although Carlene is not the one having the epiphany, she does ask Mariah for help and agree with her reasoning. This allows Carlene to believe that she was somehow involved in her brother's disappearance. Carlene realizes that she may be connected to Keith’s death/disappearance more than she thinks. Littke also uses the central conflict to describe to readers how Carlene is possibly connected to a brother she has never met. At the beginning of the story, Littke uses a specific tone to represent how Carlene feels about them moving. Carlene is describing her brother and she says, ‘Keith, disappeared eighteen years ago, three years before I was born, and nobody ever found out what happened to him” (Littke 3). Her pessimistic tone indicates to readers that she does not think there is hope for finding Keith. Right off the bat the conflict is stated and readers learn Carlene does not care much. This leads readers to believe that she might not try to find him or help, but she soon will realize that she has an undeniable connection. Carlene asks a character named Perla for help with her flashbacks. Perla then tries to kill Carlene. When the authorities get there and are talking to Carlene all she can say is, “Perla, murderer” (Littke 191). Carlene’s description of Perla directly tells the readers that she killed someone. Readers will learn that Perla killed Keith and the woman who Carlene used to be. Because Perla was a “psychic” Carlene is able to figure out her connection to Keith. The central conflict in is finding Keith and the only way to solve this is to figure out the meaning of Carlene’s flashbacks. Littke manipulates the symbolism, epiphany, and central conflict of the story to allow readers to figure out this mystery. Carlene finds out how she is connected to her brother through her flashbacks, and some help of minor characters. Anyone who loves to solve mysteries and is open to some abstract ideas will enjoy this book. Mature middle schoolers and high schoolers will enjoy this as a book they can continue to stay interested in. The undeniable human connection in this book leads characters to new discoveries which allow for it to hold readers interest.

I loved this book! It kept me at the edge of my seat because it was very suspenseful and the perfect book for me! I think it could've been a little more descriptive but, the author eliminated unnecessary events to make the book a page-turner. I was never much of a fan of mystery stories because I could never find the perfect one. This book indoctrinated me to read more mystery books. This is one book full of pure mystery which I recommend to all. I suggest that you read it at once to make it a better read.
It is a great book! i wish they made more books like this. I really don't read a lot but ever since i found this book I like it and wanted to read it everyday.
I was going through all my childhood things and read this book in fifth grade and thought it was so good! Turns out I was crazy predictable but funny to go back and read these.
When I was reading this book, I could not set it down. The details are magnificent and so intriguing. Carlene and her mother Jen go back to Lake I to find her missing brother Keith. They go through many hardships but it all smoothes out. I disliked the beginning because the plot was boring and I did not understand the details.
I found this book easy to read, and although it was confusing at the beginning, it ended up being a really interesting story. It was about reincarnation and disappearance. Twenty-two year old Keith disappeared while being out in the lake with his father (he was four when he disappeared). Years later, his younger sister Carlene was born. She never got to meet him, but somehow she had memories/visions about him, and also about another man, Jonathan. The whole novel explains how she came to the conclusion that reincarnation really did happen, and that she had once been Jonathan's wife, Elaine. It turns out that Elaine had been out in the lake when little Keith disappeared (and she had died that day). Because of this, Carlene had faint memories of what had happened, and at the end of the book she finally finds out that her brother hadn't disappeared, he had been dead all along, he died next to Elaine, and it wasn't an accident, it was an accidental murder. The killer had wanted Elaine dead, but everything went wrong and in the end four year old Keith was killed as well.
Have you ever remembered something that you shouldn't have? Or suddenly thought you've been somewhere, smelt something, or felt something...but you hadn't? Well Elane Carlene has too. While you travel with her, you see she isn't familiar with all she thinks she is. Elaine is, but elane died 8 years ago, before she was ever even born. So how is it she ‘Remembers’ memorie that aren't hers?
Keith was a 3 year old boy, who went out on a boat with his dad one sunday evening. Although it’s all fun in games until the weather got rough, and they had a storm heading their way.
When keith's dad goes under the boat, unable to get it off, trying to swim under and suddenly, out of no-where, gets knocked-out? Where is Keith, and what's going on? The only person able to remember is elain, but coincidentally she is knocked out as well?
Years later, Carlene her mom, luke, jonathan, and many other help to get to the bottom of what happened years ago. Do they figure it out? Does carlene remember Elaine's memories? And is Keith ok?
Lake of secrets was a good book about a life that has been "recycled". This book is about a girl who has been born to finish out somebody elses life named Ealine. Carlene's brother Keith, has been missing for 18 yrs. Nobody knows what exactly happened to him, but they believed that he drowned in Lake Isadora during a storm.
Carlene starts having flashbacks about Keith, but the flashbacks are from Ealines life. With the help from Perla, who's a phychic reader, Jonathan W,who is Ealines husband, and J.P., a boy who was dumped by his parents, helped Carlene get more memories back explaining Keiths death. At the end of this book they were all able to figure out, that Keith was dead.
I really liked how the author wrote this book. She would give you a hint about what was happening, but she didnt actually tell you. I really couldnt figure out what the moral was, but I think it was your parents love you even if they abandoned you.
I didn't really like this book at first, but as I started getting into it, it turned out to be a really good book.
It's about a girl, about my age, named Carlene. Her mother lost her son Keith before Carlene was born, to a tragic boat "kidnapping" and "lost child".
The mother, Jen, still thinks Keith is alive, even though he went missing around age four, and would now be in his 20's.
Carlene is having flashbacks from a older woman's point of view who was there the day of the kidnapping/lost child and she knows what happened. She died though, but then soon Carlene was born & they believe that Carlene is Elaine, in a sense of mind.
it was realy good! it is about a girl and her mom trying to get over there past! they loset ther father and son in what they thought was a boat accsadent but realy was a kidnapping! they moved away and 13 years later the moved back in need of finding the lost brother when they got there they knew nothing by a couple of weeks they had found keiths cloths and by a month they found out that a craxy woman whom wated a family of her own took him, she had them on a bot when the boat sank they all dide! Days after a local see an objest floating in the water! she goes to investagate an relizes that it was the little boy. she desided to dress him up in more eligant cloths and give him a proper burreial! she left the close for the shiriff to find and that is whuy they called the book Lake Of Screts

So the whole bit about the main character being a reincarnation of another character weirded me out at first. However, once I suspended reality and consciously thought, "Hey, isn't the fun of reading and writing the exploration of different ideas," then I enjoyed the story. It certainly wasn't a favorite from the standpoint of characters or language, but it was a fun plot concept. I wasn't very satisfied with how it was all resolved; it seemed like the lead-up didn't quite lead me to expect the ending, especially with how things ended with the main character and her love interest, but it was a pleasant, quick, not-very-challenging read.
Personally, the book was very enjoyable. Carlene slowly let her words suck you in and glue your eyes to the page making you wonder what was next. The story was quick to the point and had some foreshadowing. Carlene made you wonder about each of the characters and their personalities but also made you fall in love with them at certain points. The mystery was very intriguing and focused mainly on Carlene, her mother, and her lost brother Keith who had been missing for about 10 years. At the end, the story uncovers the truth of what really happened to Keith. This book was suspenseful and created mixed emotions not only for the story but for the characters.
Wow. That's sooo sad! I was hoping with all my heart that Keith was still alive! But I guess deep down in my conscience I knew that he would be dead....I sooo knew that Perla had something to do with Keith's disappearance. Not trying to be conceited. But I thought she just kidnapped him! Not kill him AND Elaine. That was soo sad. Uh, I was hoping Luke and Carlene would start dating cuz-no offense to anyone-I just didn't think Angelique was good enough. Ah well. JP sounds sooo adorable and the sweetest little thing ever! I want a little brother like him! Sounds cute!

Littke is amazing.I finished this book in one evening. All his characters come to life inside your imagination. Each character played an intericate part in the book. The premise was straight forward, but it had a few twists and turns to keep you wondering just what was going to happen next. The book was more like a short story. Not very long, but no wasted words. It left me heading to the Library to find more books by Lael Littke, Cudos.
The whole storyline of the book is that a 15 year old girl is having memories from a woman whom she supposedly lived as before she was born. Reincarnation so to speak. I don't go for that kind of stuff so the whole thing was moot, boring, a weak attempt at suspense. The woman was someone who witnessed an incident involving the girl's missing brother.
The jacket didn't give a lot of information to the storyline of this book but I am really glad that I picked it up. Carlene begins having memories that aren't her own and is plunged into a world of the past. What is it that she needs to remember that will help her find out what happened to her brother who disappeared before she was ever born?
A very quick read, probably because it was intended for the young adult reader. That being said, this is a good book for said audience, with just the right amount of all the elements that make up a mystery novel, while letting more of the important values stand out - family, friendship, forgiveness, letting go and moving forward.
Short but compelling story of a girl whose brother disappeared when he was four (three years before she was born), and when she and her mom go back to the town when some of his clothes are discovered, she starts having memories of someone who lived before she was born—memories that include her brother.
this book was one of the books that made me sart reading so much i read a lot still but not as much as i did last year. last year i would read a book a day now i can still do that but i have less time. this book was really good; kept me on edge
Carlene and her mother travel back to thier former town to try and unravel the mystery of ber brothers disappearence. the town triggers powerful memories of the town for Carlene- even though she nas never been there before.
Although I liked it at first -- ultimately it was an unbelievable/slightly paranormal mystery -- maybe if the novel had been slightly long -- and I had a little more time to let things sink in it would have been better ...
