Clair Campbell finds out on her 16th birthday that she’s not going crazy like women in her family are rumored to do, but that she’s become a witch, with powers she doesn’t know how to control.
Soon Clair is caught up in danger and boy drama that includes her best friend, Keith, who may or may not be after her powers (and her heart). Clair has to master her powers quickly in order to save her family. And get the guy.
Clair is turning sixteen and boy are things about to change in her life. It’s not a drivers license or a boyfriend that change things for Clair. No it the fact that her witch powers find her on her sixteenth birthday. Oh that would be the witch powers she didn’t know anything about. Her mother had been away for the last year and her father left when she was a baby. Living with her grandmother, Clair and her brother Cody always thought the women of their family were a little crazy. No it’s that the women of their family are witches. Being a witch might be fun except for the little problem that something or someone is after her powers. With her mom gone and her grandmother trying to find her, Clair is left to figure out who she can trust and how to use the new found powers. Can she survive her first day as a witch? Will her best friend help her or turn on her? Who is after her powers and can she do anything to stop them?
My thoughts:
3 stars – a good read
The Clair Witch Project is a fun little story with lots of promise. I liked the humor and fast pace. Clair has a quirky personality that was fun to be around. I liked her silly friend Squid and the cute, dedicated boy friend Keith. There were just a few little things that kept this cute story from being a great story. One was the number of typos in the story. I kept finding places where a word was repeated or a letter was missing. It wasn’t hard to figure out what it was supposed to be but it detracted from the story. Also, I would have liked a little more world building than we got. Clair was trying to figure things out on the fly and I get that was part of the story but too much was confusing and never really explained. There were a few loose ends that never got explained like who the “they” were that her mother talked about. I know I’m a detail girl so that may be too critical but I don’t like having unanswered questions at the end of a book. Finally, I think the battles Clair waged were too easily won. I know she’s a powerful witch but she hasn’t learned anything about using that power. It’s too bad this book wasn’t a little longer and fuller because I think the missing things I’ve mentions could easily have been added.
This is certainly a fun YA witch story that is worth giving a chance. It’s just not my favorite.
It's Clair's sixteenth birthday and she celebrates it with her nanna, her brother Cody and her two best friends, Keith and Squid. Her father left her before she could remember him and her mother left one year ago to go to a special place. Clair always believed it was the looney bin, but as it turns out. it was the "Institute", a refuge for witches in trouble. Every girl in the Campbell line receives her powers on her sixteenth birthday and now it is Clair's time. However, her family intended to keep it from her, hence keep her safe from the evil Sentries who steal witches powers, the Shielders. But as Clair finds out, just because everything she wishes becomes a reality, doesn't mean she can wish herself be safe and Shielders are closer than she thinks.
This was such a cute read. I loved the characters. The way they spoke and acted, it felt real to me. They felt like real teenagers and there was no point in the story where I exclaimed "That is stupid" or anything like that. It was quite refreshing. Clair was really adorable and it was so much fun being able to read her thoughts and hopes. The way the author described her was absolutely delightful and I also loved the banter and relationship between Squid, Cody and Keith. They were a pretty extraordinary bunch and I mean this in the literal sense as well.
I also liked the little twist towards the end and how everyone in Claire's life is so connected to her power and life and destiny. I just loved that because it was quite original, especially since it was stated that it was a constant, something that would keep on and on for generations.
Definitely worth a read and I would really really love a sequel! XD
Adams has created a wonderful cast of characters that are endearing to the heart. Told from Clair’s point of view, the reader becomes privy to Clair’s humor and wit as different situations befall her and her friends while she tries to make sense of her life. Adams draws the reader in from the beginning as Clair turns 16. This day is supposed to be every girls dream, but for Clair it’s more or less a nightmare.
I really enjoyed this unique novel. It’s extremely well written and the story itself is just so cute. I laughed aloud more often than not as Clair explains her thoughts and feelings over finding herself a witch. There is even a little gross humor concerning a certain female plague that hits once a month, but for me that was more comical than gross—though male readers may disagree...
