About the author

H.P. Lovecraft

Howard Phillips Lovecraft, of Providence, Rhode Island, was an American author of horror, fantasy and science fiction.

Lovecraft's major inspiration and invention was cosmic horror: life is incomprehensible to human minds and the universe is fundamentally alien. Those who genuinely reason, like his protagonists, gamble with sanity. Lovecraft has developed a cult following for his Cthulhu Mythos, a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a pantheon of human-nullifying entities, as well as the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore. His works were deeply pessimistic and cynical, challenging the values of the Enlightenment, Romanticism and Christianity. Lovecraft's protagonists usually achieve the mirror-opposite of traditional gnosis and mysticism by momentarily glimpsing the horror of ultimate reality.

Although Lovecraft's readership was limited during his life, his reputation has grown over the decades. He is now commonly regarded as one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th Century, exerting widespread and indirect influence, and frequently compared to Edgar Allan Poe.

This book was the most slowmoving ever. I kept on zoning out when I was reading it, since it just went on and on about some mountains and ancient pictures, which really did not interest me much. The fact that there was no dialogue made it even more painful to read.

H.P. Lovecraftin koottujen teosten kolmas osa "Vaaniva pelko ja muita kertomuksia" (Jalava, 2011) sisältää kaksikymmentä yksi novellia ja maineikkaan pienoisromaanin "Hulluuden vuorilla".

Ei käy kiistäminen, etteikö miehemme R'lyehissä olisi kauhukirjallisuuden historian kannalta merkittävä nimi jo luomansa Cthulhu-mytologian takia, ja toki monet hänen töistään ovatkin vallan mainioita, kuten tähän kokoelmaan eksyneet "Olio kynnyksellä", "Vaaniva pelko", "Unet noitatalossa" ja edellämainittu pienoisromaani. Läheskään kaikki novellit eivät kuitenkaan jaksa sytyttää, ja koukeroinen kieli ja puuduttava tyylillinen samankaltaisuus tutustuttavat lukijan kosmisen kauhun lisäksi myös kosmiseen pitkästymisen tunteeseen.

Lovecraft voisi toimia paremmin pienissä paloissa, kertomus tai pari kerrallaan, kuin tämmöisenä suurena kokoelmana, luulen ma.

Kokemus parani loppua kohden, kunhan totuin ilmaisuun. Siis melkein neljä, muttei ihan kumminkaan.
