The second volume covers the middle third of the novel, which corresponds largely to episode 3 of the anime, though with some other material thrown in. Which means this volume contains three of the best scenes in the series:

1) Walker and Erika interrogating one of the Yagiri Pharmaceuticals' goons, a scene sadly watered down in the anime (which makes Walker's eventual bad-assitude seem like it came out of nowhere). The manga version improves upon what's in the novel, where Walker and Erika present the goon with a variety of light novels (changed here to manga). Whichever one he chooses will become the basis for how they torture him. In the novel we only get vague descriptions of the covers, but here we're shown exactly what his options are -- Shakugan no Shana, Black Butler, Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro, etc.

2) Izaya stompin' the crap out of a girl's cellphone.

Look, I don't care if he is evil, he's my hero forever.

3) The Izaya/Shizuo/Simon brawl. Sadly, the gangbangers don't show up like in the anime, but any time Shizuo tosses a lamppost is awesome.

The one drawback to the manga is that it feels too fast. The anime had all those flashbacks that made you lose your sense of time, while the novel gives details of Mikado's everyday life at school that get glossed over by the manga, so in the other versions it felt like he'd been in Ikebukuro a while before he got sucked into the action, whereas the last scene of this volume indicates that we'll be getting the climax to the first arc in volume 3.

So, as far as I've read as of now (up to Volume 4), this is the single worst volume. Some of the contents are vomit inducing, I don't care about some dumb excuses like "it's the point!!!". I'm not going to even begin desribing what the hell I've just read. I recommend reading a summary and skipping to Volume 3 honestly. It only introduces Shizuo and the possesor of Celty's head.

This could entirely be my biased opinion, but this volume is a lot stronger than the first one DRRR!! Durarara!! 1.

We get more backstory about Celty, Dota-chin's group, the dollars, and Yagiri Pharmaceuticals. A little introduction to Shizuo Heiwajima. And get to learn a little bit more about Anri Sono Hara.

As a big fan of Dota-chin/Kadota's little group I quite enjoyed seeing more of them in action/their interactions that wasn't shown as much in the anime. And it's always interesting seeing Izaya Orihara interactions.

While pretty important to the plot, I cannot stand Namie and her relationship with her brother. I understand that there's probably a lot of trauma from having to raise your own brother after your parents were removed from the family business- BUT I really can't stand seeing her emotional incest and boy-momification. This could have potentially been more "justified" IF this was dealt with a different sensitivity, more time, and a clear distinction on just how messed up this is- but due to the plot containing so much and so many different characters (not necessarily a bad thing) this sort of thing was not done well, and certainly does not come across well either. It unfortunately makes these characters and plot-point completely unlikeable. Blood on the Tracks, Vol. 1 is a manga that does this sort of emotional incest/boy-mom thing a lot better (since it focuses on just this) it has the sensitivity and time to handle such a horrific thing with care.

Despite my complaints, I'm excited to continue reading!

I enjoyed the second volume of this wacky story so much more than I did the first.

I liked that it followed Celty's storyline a little more, who is who I was the most interested in & threads of storytelling are feeling less random & more cohesive!

The Yagiri siblings are freaking me out... Can we just scoot around that weirdness please and thank you!!

I think I will continue with this series, but I'm not intending to buy more volumes, so am going to switch to the anime most likely.

Pick it up, give it a go & enjoy!

Now that all of the characters are introduced, it's time for things to get really interesting! I love that the manga is based off of novellas, so the story has a lot more nuance than most manga, and a clearly defined beginning and end. The motion and action are really well depicted visually, and the story has mature themes that I really respect and keep me intrigued. I can't wait the read the next volumes.

Clearly still building the world and our cast of characters, I still loved it. It honestly reminds me of Charles De Lint's take on urban fantasy in that it is clearly tied to a specific locale, a modern, fully realized urban area, and tied thoroughly to various mythic characters and factors. I LOVE this stuff.

This is one of the nicest covers I've seen in such a long time!

As for the content, the first time we see a run in with izaya & shizuo and its as good as the anime was! And the ending really sets up the next volume nicely

God why do all these get ruined by incest. And the whole stalker girl thing? Ugh. Have no more interest to continue this very confusing series. Also the art isnt great. Big drop off from the first one

Naprawdę podoba mi się łączenie konceptu licealnej mangi z czymś nadprzyrodzonym i niepokojacym. Kreska jest niesamowita.

Es una empanada mental total XDDD. Me encanta que cada personaje cuente a su manera lo que ha ocurrido en el capítulo anterior.

So the stalker has the head now?
Or does the head have the stalker?
Who's in control? Because wouldn't the head want to be reunites with its body?

We're in for a fact filled volume! Which is a great thing in Durarara!'s case, as we will always be wanting more information. We see more about Celty's Dullahan past; Our favorite otaku couple/pair's (hasn't been really clarified, who knows, they might prefer 2D people) brutality hidden under wide, beguiling smiles; and pretty much get to see just how crazy these characters are.

Volume 2 wasn't as suspenseful as the first, but that's alright, it was still great! I'm just going to take a minute of silence in admiration of Akiyo Satiorigi's amazing ability with panel-placement, something I usually find lacking in manga. These panels are placed to have an impact, and it does carry through.

Shizou was one of my favorite characters in the anime series, so I'm glad that we get to see more of him this volume. Izaya isn't up to any good, per usual. And we learn the story of a motherly sister with a brother complex, said brother is in love with a bodiless head and has a stalker problem.

Story: 4.5/5 - I didn't feel quite as much impact as I did from the first volume, but it was still great and definitely recommended.
Art: 4.5/5 - Same as story: Nothing exactly wrong with it, just didn't have the same impact as the first volume did. Brilliant panel-placement.
Characters: - 5/5 - We're still in the process of being introduced to these many characters more personally. All of them are completely unique.

Thank you for reading, I hope it helps! I give my honest opinion as detailed as I wish and hope to influence your chances of purchasing the subject under review, whether it is positive or negative.

I love manga series like Durarara, which reminds me a bit of Death Note in subtle ways. First are the over the top characters that I couldn't help but enjoy learning more about. Especially interesting is the plot of the headless rider that seems to be pulling all of these characters together. The reveal in this volume really made me want more. Which is painful, because I have been forcing myself to review each book before starting the next (something I don't always do). Just to keep things straight since it seems like a manga that will reveal a bit of the puzzle each time.

The illustrations are simply awesome, I'm usually a sucker more for graphic novel illustrations because of the brilliant coloring, but this manga does quite a bit with the black and white illustrations. It is hard to review this one without revealing some of the plot, so let's just say that the loose strings of plot from the first book are becoming quite a bit more taut. There is definitely more shown as to how the characters will eventually come together and an inkling of roles they will play in further volumes.

Final Verdict: I literally will be diving into the next volume as soon as I wrap this review up. Definitely a series you do not want to miss if you like action-y manga with a dash of supernatural elements.

Well, this one will go down in my personal history as the first manga I read in Japanese. (Hopefully it won't be the last!) I admit that it helped that I knew the anime, but since that was kind of the point of picking that particular book...

I'd say I understood about 50% completely, 30% I got at least the gist of and as for the rest I haven't got a clue but figure I still got the basics.

I really love Durarara!! for its characters. Even though most of the humour passed me by, it's always a pleasure meeting these guys. (Especially Shizuo and Izaya - incidentally, their scene was the easiest to read; probably because it mostly consisted of them yelling at each other.)

So yeah, that was fun and I'm quite proud of myself. (Also, at this point I have no choice to learn how to read manga in Japanese; considering the money I already spent on Japanese manga it'd be a huge waste of money, time and effort. So on I will go!)

DRRR!!'s second volume sort of reminds me of reading Two Towers after reading Fellowship; once you get past the beginning, everything becomes more interesting (of course this is a far different than Lord of the Rings). Ikebukuro sets the stage for these interesting characters who now prove themselves to be even more intricate than before.

Dismissing all that normal review fluff, I'm just going straight to what I liked:

-Izaya
-The Trashcan Throw
-An extension of Celty's story, which gets more and more in-depth.
-Namie and Seiji (if you ignore the creepiness)

I just hope there will be more Mikado in the next volume. This is sort of a story about him, after all.

Another quite excellent volume of Durarara!!'s manga adaptation, in which we meet more of the main cast of characters and a group of nerds decide to torture a man based on which manga he picked. You should have gone for Accel World, dude! Includes a ton of curb stompin' trashcan throwin' action and IZAAAAAAAAYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA~ In other words, Shizuo Heiwajima has finally shown his beautifully blond berserk head in this series and I love it. And A+ references to Kuroshitsuji, the manga-ka of which is Ryohgo Narita's old teacher.

Another amazing chapter. I love this little world that has been created. It's kind of like Soul Eater in the sense that it's a city with supernatural elements, but DRRR is set in a city closer to reality. The way each character is connected to the other is fascinating and it will be interesting to see what part each of the gangs play in this. Shizuo is definitely my favourite character. I'm not a particularly violent person but the way he deals with his anger issues is amusing. Izaya is an intriguing and calculating character and his rivalry with Shizuo is brilliant.

I'm glad I didn't write this one off at the first volume. I had watched the anime version of DRRR a little while ago, and I thought the first volume was just a slow, watered down version. Turns out, it's not. The first volume is just setting up for the excitement.

More questions pop up in this volume, and our questions from volume one are answered with more questions. We get more information on what's going on with the characters who aren't in the main trio of Kida, Sonohara, and Mikado than we do in the anime, so it's worth reading.

Now if only they'd release the original light novels...

His volume didn't really clear things up for me but I can see things are progressing and the relationships between the characters make more sense. I do feel some anxiety that I, like Mikado, could end up sucked into such a crazy dangerous situation by reconnecting with a childhood friend. I look forward to finding out what exactly is going on. I may check out the anime.

There are some people you just don't get involved with in the city of Ikebukuro, and Mikado Ryuugamine has nearly met all of them just in his first month of moving there! Watch closely as this twisted and cracked love story begins to unfold, watch this hedonistic informant broker especially closely...

I'll admit it i am intrigued despite the problems I have keeping track of who everyone is! A lot of stuff happens and Mikado seems to be at the center of it all!

I loved the torture by manga with the two friends of his friend (Dotachin and Kadota).

This one was better than the first and I may be able to get used to trying to decipher it!

BOTTOM LINE: Am I really that compelled?

Repeated review.

The only reason I ended up reading this series is because, at one point in the past, I absolutely loved the anime. Not so much anymore since I kind of watched it so many times, it eventually just seemed pretty meh to me. Kind of like how I’ve always felt for this series as a manga; it’s just meh.
