Justesen has some real talent here. I particularly enjoyed depth of the relationships between siblings and friends that were developed. Plenty tears and smiles. If you enjoy chaste romances, give this one a try.
DO NOT READ ON IF YOU DO NOT WISH SPOILERS
Ms Jutesen made such an effort to ensure that we knew how much these Adrianna and Laura looked alike, that I knew one would be killed and the other awaken to someone else's life before I finished the first chapter. Thanks to the story brief, I also knew something would happen where her true identity would be revealed. In the first half of the book we were hit on the head with how uncomfortable Adrianna was in her life - 'like it was someone else's'. Ms Justesen did not trust her readers to come to the correct conclusions on their own. The author demonstrated such talent in the second half of the book, I know that she could have excelled in the first half if she had only believed in her readers.
As I said earlier, I think this author has some real talent and I do look forward to her future books.
What an interesting premise! I really enjoyed how this story unfolded and I was interested and invested the whole way. I would call this book a very nice distraction because that's what it was for me. The MC sure held herself together way better than I would have. I would have been crying every day! There were some heated moments in the book. I really appreciated that the author allowed the characters to express their frustrations and hurts without the swearing that I find in some books. It made it no less believable.
It was also had the sweet beginnings of romance. It was good. My favorite part was the jail bit. Funny, that.
I questioned a few things there at the end though. When the little boy got into a bit of an accident, why wasn't the mother-in-law all over that? With how hard she was on Meagan, that didn't even come up? And at the end, MIL is so happy over the pregnancy and leans on Meagan as she cries over something? That was a pretty big change of heart without explanation. And what happened to Danny? He just sort of dropped out of that story. Maybe we'll get to read his story later? What about Danny's sister? They were all close, but we don't see any contact with her at all. Just seemed a bit weird.
Overall, a good read. Left me feeling good and was just the distraction I needed for the day (or two). I'm ready to tackle those other books now.
What would you do if you woke up from a near fatal accident with no memories? You’d have to take the word of people that were strangers to you & assume it was the truth. As time goes on, things should get more familiar, right?
This was an intriguing story to read. You couldn’t help but feel for Adrianna and the position she was in. The confusion & pain has to be overwhelming. The interactions between her & the other characters were emotional as they tried to helping her come to terms with everything. She managed to weather the accident, numerous surgeries, a broken engagement & then came a medical emergency that completely pulled the rug out from underneath her. How she weathered the final storm said a lot about her & her character. The author did a fantastic job of expressing the emotions of all characters & the painful healing process. I really enjoyed this story & cant wait to read Danny’s story.
After a terrible bus accident Adrianna Mueller has to rebuild her life with no memories as she suffers from amnesia. There were a couple of twists in this story but overall I loved the character development and the budding romance between two unlikely candidates. It explores grief and all the facets that come with it and also complex family relationships. I enjoyed this book. It was fun to see how it played out in the end.
While the storyline was a little unbelievable, I actually loved it. I loved the family and friends and all that they went through together. This was a sweet, clean romance.
An intriguing story. Image waking up to no memories and meeting family you can’t remember. I loved this book and did not want to put it down. It is a clean, emotional, intriguing romance.
Can you imagine waking up in somebody else's life? Or, at least, it feels like somebody else's because you can't remember anything about your previous experiences, not even your own name?
Heather Justesen has written a book exploring just what that might feel like. Adrianna, a well-known concert pianist, is in an accident and wakes up not knowing who she is. She is surprised to find that she enjoyed playing the piano in front of thousands of people, when she cannot even remember how to play simple melodies. She doesn't remember her family or friends, or even her fiance. Disconcerting, to say the least.
While the plot line is fairly predictable, I didn't know the means by which the end (which I knew within the first few pages) would come about. I definitely wanted to keep reading to see how it would all unravel. Besides, Heather is a very talented writer. Her characters feel like friends, and I enjoyed getting to know them.
All of that said, I was a little disappointed in some of the background research and some loose ends that I think an editor should have caught before it went to press. Like, what ring? (I won't expound on that question further, at the risk of spoiling things for you)(also, it's possible the ring was explained better but maybe that part was cut?) And no professional orchestra conductor would ever refer to an orchestra rehearsal as a practice. (Since I'm actually married to an orchestra conductor, I can say that with absolute confidence.) There were a few other musical things that were a bit off, but they didn't bother me quite as much as the rehearsal/practice issue did. Finally, I felt that even though it was written by an LDS author (hooray for LDS authors!), the Mormon-ness in this particular story was a little out of place. The characters going to church or talking about it just felt awkward to me. Like it was put in the book just to say, "I'm an LDS book!" when it had no real bearing on the plot at all.
I feel a little bad about pointing those things out, but I think they stood in the way of making a good book great. I'd still recommend reading it, because it is good. The story was very intriguing and I enjoyed it quite a lot. It's definitely a nice, quick summer read.
And hey! Lucky you--Heather has arranged a nice discount for you if you like e-books. From now until the end of July, if you go to this Smashwords page and enter code WV49Z, you can download the book for only $1.49! Happy reading!
This was such an incredible read - so poignant! I couldn't put this book down - I stayed up almost all night to finish this. I needed to find out what happened!
We start the story with Adrianna and Laura on a bus together sharing photos and stories - two women so similar in looks that they could easily pass for twins. Adrianna borrows Laura's phone to play a game and Laura is looking through Adrianna's photos in her wallet. They are chatting with other passengers to pass the time on a long bus ride. Suddenly they are struck by an out of control SUV and all their lives are changed. Several people are dead and Adrianna is hospitalized with major injuries including memory loss.
She wakes up confused, lost and in pain. People coming in and out faces she just can't place. A fiance she can't remember but desperately wants to. I couldn't imagine going through the pain and frustration that Adrianna went through - to not remember anything but the basics. To top it all off, she has to re-learn the piano - something she struggles with and just can't quite grasp.
Thrust into a life she can't remember, Adrianna struggles with everything. She can't quite live up to the expectations of her fiance and family. Gavin - a family friend, her brother and his wife help her try and place the memories and bits and pieces that start to come back to her. Confusing them all with stories that don't fit into Adrianna's life.
I don't want to give away too much of the story - this was a great story with well written and engaging characters. The chemistry between Gavin and Adrianna is wonderful - how they work together and build their relationship throughout all the troubles in getting Adrianna's life sorted out.
A great read for anyone who enjoys christian contemporary romance.
A few weeks ago I purchased Heather Justesen's new e-book Blank Slate and installed it on my Nook. I was really in the mood for a good read and this one had a nice twist to it. Although a bit longer than most LDS romances, I enjoyed the plot and found the main character, Adriana, to be well written. Her thoughts and feelings were believable in the unusual circumstances of the plot. Her character was three-dimensional for me.
Synopsis: Adrianna Mueller may be a world-renowned concert pianist, but when she wakes from her coma after a serious car accident, her ability to perform has disappeared as completely as her memory. As she recovers from her injuries, she struggles with the expectations of everyone—her family, friends, and fiancé, Brock—who all want everything to go back to the way it was.
Everyone except Gavin, Adrianna’s brother’s business partner, who finds himself drawn to the woman she is now. But he has his own problems. As he tries to get a handle on a former employee’s embezzlement, he fights his growing feelings for Adrianna.
And then a trip to the emergency room shakes everything up, leaving her to stumble as she tries to regain her footing all over again.

Other books by Heather Justesen include Rebound and The Ball's in Her Court.
Laura and Adrianna were so similar in features that they could just about pass for twins. Laura and Adrianna were riding together in a car when they were involved in a car accident. Unfortunately, Adrianna was the only survivor. The accident has left Adrianna with amnesia. This is sad as Adrianna is a famous concert pianist. Hopefully Adrianna will regain her memories soon.
Gavin works with Adrianna’s brother. They are business partners. Gavin must admit that he never really paid that much attention to Adrianna in the past. Of course, it had to do with the fact that she was his business partner’s sister. There is something different about Adrianna. Gavin can not pinpoint what it exactly is but Gavin is falling for Adrianna.
I thought this book was alright. I must admit that I never became fully invested in the characters. I did not find Adrianna to be a strong presence, which was sad as I wanted her to be as she was the main lead. This might have been due to the fact that everyone else was crowding Adrianna trying to get her to remember and not let her really embrace her new outlook on life. The chemistry between Gavin and Adrianna was mild. It was slow to build up. Black Slate missed the high notes for me. I might give author, Heather Justesen another chance in the future.
Justesen has written a novel about the power of strength and love. Sometimes your family isn't just through blood ties but by who is there when you need them. Cherish your friends and your family. Accidents happen. Be thankful. Don't hold grudges. You never know just what tomorrow will bring you.
Adrianna has been in a serious car accident, leaving her with amnesia. Coming back from a resort trip, the bus she was riding on, got hit by a car that was rolling through the air. Many people were injured, some even died. Now, Adrianna can't seem to recall anything from her life whatsoever. She is a concert pianist that is well known and has toured around the world, yet she doesn't remember how to play anything at all. Getting out of the hospital, and moving into her brother's home, she still has no memories and over time, grows to have interests that everyone says isn't her. Brock, her fiance ends up giving up on her and leaving because she just doesn't seem herself yet, she's oddly ok with the breakup. Gavin, an old friend seems to be the only one who is really there to comfort her. He is the only one who can make sense of things. And suddenly, when sharp pains send Adrianna to the Emergency Room, things suddenly become a lot more clear. Now it all makes sense. And now things have to start all over again.
A wonderful story full of heart and turmoil that makes you think about how much each person is defined by the people they surround themselves with and the skills and assets they have inherently. A slow start from the beginning, but once the story starts to unfold it is one book that is beyond hard to put down.
I was reminded of a true story where two college girls are in an accident and the one that lives is mistakenly taken care of the other girl's family. A heartbreaking story that may happen more often, but we just don't hear of it. How often are quick judgements made at the scene of accidents?
The characters were endearing and frustrating all at the same time. They were real to the core, which I found refreshing and beyond enjoyable. Their reactions to the situations they were put into was something that I can't rave enough about because I felt it was true each time.
I would recommend this book as a great read at just under 200 pages it is short, but a lot of punch is packed in this little novel.
This was an interesting mystery, involving a bus crash, the death of some of the passengers and revolves around one passenger, Adrianna Mueller, who survives, but suffers from amnesia. Although it was easy to pick up the main storyline (which I won't reveal here), suffice to say, enough clues where involved to easily know what had happened to the character. The real interest comes from how Adrianna tries to pick up the pieces of her life, including her relationship with her family and a fiance whom she neither recognizes, or finds herself attracted to when she wakes up from her coma. The story follows the repercussions of the accident, the worries and concerns of both Adrianna and those around her when she doesn't seem to be recalling anything of her past life - and what happens when the shocking truth is revealed. Add an enjoyable romance and well-rounded characters, and you find yourself enjoying a well-written book. Recommended.
This was a quick, easy read. It was fun and kind of fluffy, but not as predictable as I thought it might be.

Sometimes a book just grabs you and doesn't let go. Blank Slate was one of those books. I couldn't put it down. Imagine what it would feel like if you woke up from an accident and everyone told you the you were one person, but you felt like someone else? The author does a great job of exploring that subject in this book. The romance was very sweet. I loved Gavin's character. He is the only one who really accepts Adrianna for who she is after the accident.
Blank Slate is beautifully and well written. Even though it wasn't hard to see where the story was headed, I still enjoyed getting there with everyone in the book. I don't want to give too much away, though. Let's just say I wasn't surprised halfway through.
Plot: Few books have me complaining when I have to put them down, but this one did! It keeps you on your toes, with a huge twist towards the end that you don't see coming.
Characters: I found myself getting mad at the annoying characters often! Heather does a great job of describing their personalities.
Setting: I found it confusing at first as to where Adrianna was at. There is a few places she goes to, and it's hard to keep track some times.
Overall: I give few books 5 star ratings. The lucky few have to be really good! Blank Slate was no exception. I was engrossed in it from the beginning and it kept my interest all the way into the satisfying ending. Definitely a great read!
It was okay. The story was fascinating, but the writing just wasn't very good. There was an embarrassing amount of typos and sometimes words were missing from sentences, AND they misspelled Megan's name the first time she was introduced, which just confused me when it was spelled differently for the rest of the book (first spelled Meghan but then spelled Megan for the rest of the book). Yikes. The book had a lot of potential, but it ended up being so-so. Not much development in the romance between Gavin and Adrianna. It all just kind of happened. First date. Kiss. Boom. They're in love. (?) Interesting story, but poorly executed.
I liked this book! I liked the fact that it was different enough to not have me bored with the typical plot. I did know about the "big" plot twist from the beginning, because it was alluded to, many times. I loved the fact that it was set in Kansas, so I recognized the names of cities. The characters are very well-done! I really felt like I knew them and liked (or disliked) them! There was only one part where I laughed and had to read it to my husband. It was a very satisfying read, not too depressing or crazy or typical or comical, so all-in-all, I liked it!
So, overall I liked this one. It definitely had a unique premise so that was fun. I liked our main character and thought she handled herself well under the circumstances. I liked Gavin, he was a good leading man and I thought they had good chemistry together. There were some parts that felt a little long, but for the most part I thought it moved along well. It was definitely a tough situation. I would write more, but I don’t want to give anything away. I thought it was a nice way to spend an afternoon.
I read the e-book version of Blank Slate. I have to be really careful what I say because I don't want to give away any of the good plots twists. I loved the characters, the complex emotions Adrianna goes through after the accident as she tries to re-acclimate to life, and the romantic element - well, I'm a romance chicky, so that was my favorite part! The other totally awesome element of Blank Slate is that it's set in my stomping grounds - Kansas City, Kansas! Woot!
I won this book on the Goodreads giveaway page! Thanks so much!
I liked the story but it was a bit slow in the beginning. The second half was much better. I seem to remember something in the news years back that was kind of similar with two friends that were in an accident and one died and they were mixed up about who had died until way later. I can't imagine the heartbreak that would go on in that situation! Overall a nice story!
This was a fun read. I don't usually have high expectations for books given to me for review because of past experience, but this one was worth the read. I'd recommend it for a book club pick simply for the twists the story throws. There are parts that are gushier than I like to read, but emotions evoked by the experiences of the characters felt accurate. I don't dare say too much because I don't want to spoil the book for future readers.
I bought this book from the author at a book signing. I was intrigued by the cover and wondered about the story. This is a clean romance. From information given in the first two pages, I could guess what was coming, and it left me wondering how the story would all play out. There were several story threads going on that were all nicely pulled together at the end. If you like clean romance, this is a fun read.
This was a really good book! The beginning was kind of predictable but it was fun to read how her memory came back. After watching so many crime shows I didn't think this kind of mix up would ever be possible. It was a fun read. It captivates you and you want to keep reading to find out what will happen next and will she regain her memory? Heather Justesen is a great author and I enjoy all of her novels!!!
I loved the story, it was an amazing story of mistakened identities from a terrible tradegy. Amazing story of personalities and the gift of forgiveness. I won this book through a contest from clean romances group, thank you Heather for sending it to me. I truly enjoyed it, I hope to pass it to my reading buddy at the gym. I also find it amazing that heather does all that she does at home and still has time write, truly extraordinary!!
I don't know why but one of my favorite themes is amnesia so I really enjoyed this book. All the characters in the book were amazing and I easy fell in love with them all. I especially loved the main character as she was so sweet. The romance in the book is also very sweet and clean. I don't want to give anything away but I recommend you read this book and enjoy it for yourself. I just realized that this book has another book after it called "The Switch" so I'm off to start that right now.
First, let me say that this is the first time I'd heard about Heather Justesen when I got this for my Kindle (either cheap or free). But it won't be the last time I read her. Second, I'm a sucker for amnesia stories, so I was drawn into this one right away. I liked the characters and the real emotions expressed... very realistic. And because it was a CLEAN book (thank you Ms Justesen), I could even overlook any grammatical or spelling errors (which, usually, annoy me) ;).
I liked this story. I felt that sometimes there were sidetracks to the story--things thrown in that were not central to the story, conversation or detail side-tracks--I scan-read those. I wasn't sure how much to "believe" all the situations that lack of "Adie's" memory created. However, I did like the characters and I am always up for a good amnesia story. I am not interested in reading book 2 (etc.) in the series but would read more by the author otherwise.
