The Spin Cycle

Latisha Patterson's "Airing Out Dirty Laundry" details the lives of best friends Skye, Damisha, Kori, Jamyya and Jasmine and their drama. Skye's live-in boyfriend is clingy with stalker-like tendencies. Damisha can't decide between the two men in her life. Kori would be happily married if it wasn't for her husband's baby mama drama. Jamyya is an overworked and underappreciated wife and mother. Jasmine, the baby of the crew, is forced to grow up fast with life as her teacher. The scene is set from drama, drama and more drama.

If I had to describe "Airing Out Dirty Laundry" in two words, it'd simply be: too much. This book suffers from too much of so many things. It's overflowing with drama. While there is never a dull moment, it's often too much. Whether you liked them or not, there were some interesting characters, but there were too many. It was hard enough keeping up with the five main characters' stories, but add to that their men, their family members and anyone else they came into contact with in their lives. Every single person, no matter how insignificant, was given a name and in many cases a back story. It was too much.

Then too much turned into ridiculous with the fashion and name dropping. Jimmy Choo, Seven, Dooney & Bourke, Hugo Boss, Baby Phat, Chanel, Michael Kors, Juicy Couture, Prada, Bebe, Movado, Jordans, Dolce & Gabbana, True Religion, Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Coach, Roca Wear, Rolex, Apple Bottom, Miu Miu, Nike, Furla, YSL, Louis Vuitton, Lexus, Escalade, Infiniti, and Mercedes Benz. That's just the first five chapters of the book. You can only imagine the full 368 pages. It was absolutely, positively, and utterly ridiculous! I repeat: absolutely, positively, and utterly ridiculous! Had this book not been for review, I would have probably put it down. It was so much that I pulled out a highlighter and marked all the brand references as I read. I never needed to put the top back on my highlighter. That's not only ridiculous but also frivolous and superficial. A book should NOT read like a fashion magazine without pictures. This book could have been better had the author simply focused more on the story and less on the wrong things.

More ridiculous than the fashion and name dropping were the physical descriptions of some characters. Beauty went hand-and-hand with "pretty" wavy, long hair, "pretty" eyes and mixed characters. I counted 12 characters with green, gray, hazel and/or light brown eyes. There may have been more as I lost count after awhile. Someone needs to call the Guinness Book of World Records because surely this is a genetic phenomenon! With so much emphasis on the eyes, I just knew that there was a twist of some sort where everyone was related. Not. Absolutely, positively, and utterly ridiculous!

The narration faltered with too many narrators. In addition to first-person narration from the five main characters (which was a lot already), lesser characters were given a chance to tell the story from their point of view. One narration was as short as three paragraphs and one point of view was a one-shot deal. There were also some issues with the editing.

With that said, despite all its issues, Latisha Patterson's "Airing Out Dirty Laundry" was a pretty decent read. It was very entertaining. It wasn't simply a book of drama and characters doing things for the sake of drama; there were consequences, growth, maturation and lessons learned. The author did a good job of building tension and keeping the book fast-paced and interesting. The fact that I was able to enjoy this book despite all of its glaring issues speaks volumes. However, I'd strongly advise that the author seek the aid of a developmental editor to focus her writing and do away with the frivolous, foolish and unnecessary. With a little assistance, I see great potential with debut author Latisha Patterson and I look forward to her growth.

How it all begins with the tale of friends the Fabulous Five, Skye, Jasmine, Damisha, Jamyya, and Kori they all have been friends ever since middle school. Strange things start happen to all of them as they are about to embark on some craziness as the drama begins to unfold. They start having all kinds of drama that spills over into their lives and the lives of each other. Needless to say when sex, deceit, lies and even lust creeps all around these women, relationships, trust, friendships, even jealous takes them on a wild spin cycle, adding a bit of fuel to the fire, isn't what was recommended for these situations. One thing is for sure they are always trying to help each other with their problems, but are willing to take their own advice.

Skye is such a high class diva at all cost, the only child and spoiled rotten by her parents, but somehow she ends up with a lunatic for a boyfriend, he's very sweet, charming at first and great father good provider, but he has a major issues his obsession with Skye. He is always around, calling millions of times a day showing up everywhere she goes,THE STALKER I mean darn near almost turning into a fatal attraction, but does Skye ever break free from this walking time bomb or does she continue to deal this possessive fool and his actions.

Damisha is a female playa so she thinks until, she get involved with a couple of fellas that don't mind playing the games she plays, but as the emotions of love comes into the mix is she in way over her head, or could this be too much to handle, will she begins to reap what she has sown, in other words what goes around comes around. The heart is the wrong thing to play with, laying down with someone and getting up feelings, wasn't something she planned on that happening. She is about to lose everything including herself, will she regain her composure or will she fall prey in the games that she plays.

Kori is the devoted wife and mother of 2 children, and is the salon owner of Diva Styles, making money is what she does, and taking care of her hubby Jerome, but he has a fool of a baby momma, yes she is dealing with his baby momma drama. She has some issues of her own too, with her baby daddy. Now the kettle can't call the pot black. See how this story plays out will their marriage be tested or stretched beyond repair?

Jamyya is the backbone is the group she had to enter into adulthood very fast with a mother on drugs leaving her with younger siblings to care for ends up pregnant herself to add stream to the entire situation. But she married and her hubby helps her with her siblings, but the babies keep coming, now she has 4 children, tired, overworked and the loving housewife, her husband really takes her for granted, all that she does to keep this family together. Does he begin to realize what she means to him and they family. Or will she become fed up with him not helping her with their family?

Jasmine is the baby of the Fabulous Five she loves children, and works as assistant teacher at daycare. She has a boyfriend, but she believes he is cheating on her, but can't prove it, or can she? He always lies to her about where he goes, and why he doesn't answers his phone. She has an older sister, but for some reason they have a very messed up relationship, will they or can they mend the sisterly relationship, or does she find out if her boyfriend is being true to her, or will he get catch in action in the ultimate betrayal?

This novel will keep you guessing on how will they ever get together or will lives and friendships, or relationship will ever be the same.

I highly recommend that you get your very own copy today!!!!

This book was off the chain. Skye's boyfriend Omar has got to be the craziest man I ever seen in a relationship. How the hell do you stalk your own girlfriend? Skye and all her friends are what I call true divas. I love the way they support each other through all the drama in their individual lives. Skye should have been happy that someone was crazy enough to take Omar off her hands.

Damisha was my all time favorite because she was stuck between two men who wanted to be with her but of course she had to fall for the playa instead of the good guy. I wanted so badly for Chris to man up and put Damisha in her place. After getting her heart broken a few times Damisha finally wised up and made an honest woman of herself for Chris.
Coco was the ghetto diva who had drama come in her life from all angles. Not only did she have to deal with baby momma drama from her husband's Jerome crazy ex but she had to deal with her oldest son father's girlfriend drama as well. With a temper as bad as Coco there was bound to be some action. Coco's bad temper landed her with assault charges and she managed to escape doing jail time. Too bad Jasmine wasn't so lucky. Poor little Jasmine was in love with a pure dog that was sleeping with her sister on the low. Not only is that the ultimate betrayal but he had the never to propose marriage after doing so. Joy who is Jasmine sister was just as crazy as Yolanda and Omar. I never knew sex could be that good to make a woman stalk you and put her own sister out the house.

Jamyya to me was a goody two shoes with the perfect husband and kids until her mom moves in and messes everything up. Jamyya's mom was off the chain and when she got out of jail it made things in her life go from good to bad in a matter of minutes. Jamyya's husband hated her mom and so did her little sister. The rift between them at thanksgiving was the funniest scene in the book.
This book was full of emotion. I laughed, cried and was even yelling at the characters a times. I felt like I really knew these people

Can you say a lot to read!
There is so much going on in this book you are sure to NOT get bored at all. Pay attention so you don't miss one tasty tidbit! These friends have got secrets, attitudes and desires coming out of every part of them and enough going on between them for a few more books.
Between the hair salon gossip, the dirty little set ups, and the unspoken innuendos, there is never a dull moment.
Damaysha was like off the hook and was by far my fav to read about. Seeing that im new to VA, i can't wait to find out how much of the places she mentioned are real or fictional!@

This was a different type of read for me, and though reading about 5 people with SO much going on, was sometimes over whelming for me, i can say i thoroughly liked reading every bit of it! I couldn't put down.
Great job Latisha!

This is my first read by this author. This was an overall good read. There were a couple of parts where I felt like I could have used just a little bit more info. This story centers around four friends each with their own issues that they are dealing with. When times get to hectic in their personal lives, they come together with each other to vent and get advice. I liked how they each were there for each other. Though they did not always get along (which is to be expected) they were always there for each other in their time of need. See how the ups and downs of these four friends and their relationships unfold. This book had me laughing, mad and shocked (probably not in that order lol). This was an overall great read and I can not wait to read part 2.

Recall the saying, can't see the forest for the trees? This book suffers from not being able to see the big picture because we are bogged down with minute details. Do not get me wrong, a story is there, I just feel if certain details were omitted this book would have been a lot shorter and a whole lot better. Ms. Patterson has the makings to be a phenomenal writer but an editor would have taken out a lot of filler.
