Marsheila Rockwell

Marsheila (Marcy) Rockwell was born [redacted] years ago in America's Last, Best Place. A descendant of kings, pilgrims, Ojibwe hunters and possibly a witch or two, she spent the first few years of her life frolicking gleefully in a large backyard that is now part of one of the nation's largest Superfund sites. Perhaps that explains her early penchant for fantasy and horror - the first book she ever read (at the tender age of three) was Frank L. Baum's "Ozma of Oz."

Marcy sold her first short story to Marion Zimmer Bradley while in college and her first novel to Wizards of the Coast in 2005. She now lives in the desert in the shadow of an improbably green mountain and in odd moments stolen from her family and her writing, she can be found browsing eBay for Wonder Woman/Girl figures.

Loyal to D&D Mechanics

I've read several official D&D novels and this is the only one that felt like it could have taken place in game. The author wove a compelling tail within the constraints of D&D rules. I concede that this is not important to most readers but I want to give the author credit where credit is due. She didn't just write a fantasy book reskinned as D&D; she wrote a D&D book. I only have 4 stars because I found Greddark entirely unlikeable and cheered against him the entire time.

This murder mystery set in the Eberron realm has all the plot aspects of a good pulp detective novel, combined with all of the fantasy elements of dungeons and dragons. The setting is dark, the violence gritty, and the characters tough. The rag-tag trio of characters Irulan, Greddark and Andri use their skills as shifter, inquisitive and paladin to stumble their way to uncover the truth. Though their individual secrets and motives sometimes conflict, making their path to solving the murders a very interesting one.
I felt there was a budding romance between Irulan and Andri , which never came to fruition, though this might be in the final installment.
I'm intrigued enough by this story to check out the other 3 books in this series.

It's a mixed okay; I liked a lot of this but it was a not-infrequently frustrating read. The prose is mostly pretty good and then you get non sequiturs, nonsensical dialogue or actions, or internal character thoughts that left me exasperatedly wondering "what the heck are you trying to say here?".

I feel the lore and feel of Oberon takes a bit if learning and slightly distracts from the story but the plot (well, I figured out who the baddie was early on) that led to who the baddie was was pretty good.

Nicely written.

This isn't just a story set in the D&D/Eberron setting, it's literally an adventure. Author Marsheila Rockwell has taken care to abide by D&D rules, including spell components. Even thought spells and abilities are not named, anybody who's played the game long enough (especially, the classes of the main characters) would be able to figure out. I love it!

Well-written book with mostly well thought characters, that unfortunately suffers from bad pacing. It still helps enrichen understanding of the Silver Flame and I would recommend it to Eberron fans.

Why I love ebooks: you go to a Con and you meet an author. You really enjoy meeting the author and want to buy her/his books. But you and the author are sad, because the publisher doesn't keep books in print for very long. But wait! Because of this wondrous new technology, publishers will make the book available as an ebook! Hurray! Author and reader are both happy! Yes, this is exactly what happened to me. And yes, I was a happy reader.

Even if you're not a D&D player, or if you've never played in the D&D campaign world of Eberron, this is a good story. It's a fantasy murder mystery and has enough suspense that even if you figure out whodunit before the end of the book, you should like seeing how the tracking down of clues and suspects all works out.

Oh, and don't worry about having to read the other 3 (Wizards of the Coast put out 4 titles in the Inquisitives series) books; each was written by a different author and the only thing that ties them together is that there is at least one character in the character class "Inquisitive." Although, I may have to go and read the others…..

Another excellent addition to the Inquisitive series (each book in the series is a stand alone). Legacy of Wolves is a mixture of mystery novel and good old fashioned adventure (with a little bit of political intrigue mixed in) all set in the fantasy world of Eberron.

The characters are all interesting and well-written. They are given interesting back stories that made them multidimential characters. You truly begin to care about these character. But they are not ruled by their back stories. Instead they show growth and development over the tale.

The plot and mystery are also well done and the pacing of the story was just rght for me. The story starts with 2 separate groups investigating the murders but coming at it with different perspectives. This part was very well done and helped reveal more clues to the reader.

Overall the book was excellent and I would not hestitate to recommend it to fans of fantasy literature as well as mystery readers.

It was a good story. Full of shifters and werewolves. Was nice to see an Eberron book that didn't have a warforged as a main character, or even part of the group. It is nice to see them in ths world, but there are others that you can write about. A mystery started with a rash of killings being done by shifters. At least that is what the church wants you to believe. One of the victims that got away hired a dwarven inquisative to look into it. Meanwhile a Paladin of the flame, and Irulan; a shifter, are trying to find out the cause for the Queen.

A very fun little mystery. I had zero familiarity with the Eberron world, but the author did a nice job of putting background in without bashing me over the head with it. I liked the characters very much, especially the grumpy dwarf inquisitive. ;-)

An engrossing fantasy detective story (I especially liked Greddark, the Sherlock-Holmes-meets-James-Bond dwarf).
