"Pale Dog" is the first published story about sorcerer Marla Mason, the notorious witch queen of Felport, and star of the urban fantasy series by T.A. Pratt. Marla and her right-hand man Rondeau track down a treacherous sorcerer who refuses to stay dead, with help from an adorable white dog... who may, possibly, be a hound from hell. and there's also a haunted zoot suit.
T.A. Pratt is the pseudonym of Tim Pratt, under which he penned the Marla Mason books.
I've crowdfunded seven projects (four through Kickstarter) successfully in the past few years, and I don't foresee any problems with this one, either. I write novels for a living, and this is a book I'm excited to do. It's always possible there will be bumps and delays on the production process, or an unforeseen illness or other disaster, but if so, I'll keep everyone posted, and we'll get there in the end.
3.5 Marla Mason and Rondeau are looking for a sorcerer who is supposed to be dead (Marla's orders). They are trying to find out what is really going on. At the same time, Rondeau's haunted suit seems to be a bigger problem than he expected. Add to all that a white little dog that's been following them and their day is about to become a lot more interesting. The strangest thing about the dog is that everyone starts acting like they love that animal a lot. The strange in all that is that Rondeau is definitely not a dog person and he still wants to pet him. Marla neither loves nor hates dogs, but she feels the same as Rondeau.
This was a fun little story, with some clever ideas, and it leaves an opening for a future appearance of the titular pale dog. It has a good mixture of snark, violence, and humor. 3.5 stars.
I have to admit that this is fast becoming one of my favourite series. Marla Mason is just so much fun to read!
This happens to be another prequel story, and it's a fun one. What do you get when you mix a sorcerer who refuses to die, a haunted zoot suit, a very compelling white dog, and one of the best sorcerers in Felport? An excellent adventure!
This short story was well written, has super cool supernatural elements, and totally cracked me up in some places. I had a lot of fun reading this little Marla and Rondeau saga. Awesome!
This is certainly the best of the Marla Mason shorts. It fills in a bit of info about Todd Sweeney and let's you see the banter and characteristics of both Marla and Rondeau in their more familiar best buds format. The dog is really a nice touch in that you can appreciate how it would infuriate Marla and confuse Rondeau while still being an integral part of the story. There is also room for bringing the dog back in at a future point. As a Marla fan, this is a must read.
