In this gorgeous collection, twenty-five of Poe's most beloved works are each illustrated with stunning, full-color collage artwork. Poems include "The Raven," "The Bells," and many others. Brief commentary and helpful definitions accompany each poem, making The Illustrated Edgar Allan Poe among the most accessible―and beautiful―introductions to Edgar Allan Poe available. From the SUGGESTION 1: Enjoy the poems. This seems far more important than trying to puzzle out what the author meant (or what other people believe the author meant). SUGGESTION 2: Engage with the poems by asking questions…. SUGGESTION 3: Be your own boss. Read the poems in order or jump around as you see fit. Share them or savor them all by yourself. Say them aloud or whisper their words in your heart. Poetry makes life better. There is NO wrong way to experience a poem. So, read on, dear friend. And thank you for choosing poetry.
This is a beautiful volume, fine illustrations, a section that defines words and names, and interesting questions about the poems . Most of these poems I had not read. Poe is clearly a major American poet. His language and his writing are beautiful. He seems well versed in mythology. I personally did not enjoy the morbid nature of these poems but I was aware of that before I read the book. This volume is still outstanding. A wonderful feature of this volume is the commentary on the poems. It helped me greatly to understand what the works were about!. This is a Junior book but it must be for smart juniors. I read this book for a classics book club.
Lovely illustrations with interesting thoughts about the poems. However, I found this book in the "children's" section of the library or with a "J" call number and I feel that this book is more inclined to the young adult area or middle/high school students. I think a little more explanation of the poems would have been helpful (I know -- poetry should be interpreted by reader, but still), especially if the book is intended for the primary grades.
Great selection and organization, helpful notes, and I appreciated the editor's approach to just enjoy. This is an illustrated edition and I did not like most of the illustrations hence the star dock.
beautiful illustrations and side notes! loved the bit in the beginning about how we should read poetry to feel and enjoy and engage instead of trying to uncover what the author truly meant. the beauty is in our own interpretations!!
The book is beautiful and I love Poe but I think I prefer his stories. I’m not a crazy poetry fan. I know Poe’s intention was to be a poet but his stories for me are my favorites. Still a beautiful book.
