An imaginative and heartfelt book that reminds us that there is no loss without love.
When Grief first arrives, it is like an elephant—so big that there is hardly room for anything else. But over time, Grief can become smaller and smaller—first a deer, then a fox, a mouse, and finally a flickering firefly in the darkness leading us down a path of loving remembrance.
This lyrical work is an empathetic and comforting balm for anyone who is experiencing grief, be it grieving the loss of a loved one or losses in the world around us.
REASSURING FEELINGS Children can often feel confused by their emotions. The gentle voice and soft illustrations in this book help to make these emotions feel less frightening, and the hopeful ending provides a reassuring message that grief will transform over time.
TIMELESS REFLECTION ON The perennial themes of grief and sadness, as well as the graceful art style, make this perfect for anyone who is dealing with feelings of loss, whether that involves the loss of a loved one, grieving a pet, managing emotions during or after moving or being displaced, or responding to losses in a community or the larger world.
The open-ended narrative covers grief in a way that is not directly related to death. Poignant and honest, this book is a resource for parents and caregivers looking for ways to talk to children about grief and other kinds of sadness.
BEAUTIFUL PICTURE BOOK FOR ALL The exceptional text and art are a soothing treat to read. Like the best social-emotional books for kids, this lovely grief book holds as much meaning for kids navigating new feelings as for adults handling their own or their family's emotions around loss.
Perfect and grandparents seeking grief books for kidsTeachers and librarians seeking children's books about emotions to recommend or read aloudGrief resource for social workers and other caregiversAnyone looking for books about griefA thoughtful gift for a grieving child, loved one, or friend
Grief Is an Elephant Tamara Ellis Smith Nancy Whitesider

This book came out with perfect timing. I needed some picture books on grief and had been having a hard time finding good ones for my nephew who’s dad had terminal cancer; this book was released the week before his dad passed away. The book is beautifully written and has a great message about the feelings of grief subsiding (with ebbs and flows) over time, but the love we feel and memories we have never leaving. Applicable for all types of grief. My only challenge with the book was that the early pages describe getting away from grief by running. I think the author might have been trying to map this to stages of grief, but I was concerned it was sending the wrong message to my nephew who has a hard time confronting his emotions. I made sure to point out the flaws with running from grief when I read this with him. Ultimately, though, the book emphasizes other, healthier ways of dealing with grief, like sitting with the emotions. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book for anyone looking to talk to kids about the feelings surrounding grief. I’m so grateful for it.
Hey I’m almost 23 and I was about to cry!!! The artwork is gorgeous and this perfectly depicts the fave stages of grief. You can tell that whoever wrote this book lost someone very dear to them.
Grief is heavy, heavy as an elephant when it first hits. There can’t be a great loss without great love. So, when someone leaves our life, they don’t leave our hearts. Grief can be a tough emotion for kids to manage and understand but this new children’s book handles this topic delicately and in a way that kids can visualize and understand.
From the heaviness of an elephant when grief first hits to the stillness of a deer to the quietness of a fox, and the curiousness of a mouse, grief slowly becomes lighter and easier to talk about. Finally, the grief lightens after a time until it becomes as small as a firefly and you’ll be able to remember your loved one with a bit of wonder.
It can be so difficult to explain loss to a child especially when as adults, we are also hurting. Smith’s simple explanations combined with Whitesides’s calming watercolored illustrations allow both adults and kids to grieve together and share their feelings or just sit in the quiet space until the heaviness lightens.
This children's book about grief and its effects is a very metaphorical and poetic story. It follows a young Asian girl as she experiences grief in waves and smaller sizes over time. It begins as a surprising and suffocating elephant, then transforms into a less subtle deer, an even sneakier fox, a little mouse, and then the tiniest firefly. The moral of the story, though, is that no matter how small it gets, grief will usually always be there. We can face it when we're ready to deal with it in whatever form it is in. The story can be a bit abstract for children, so I wouldn't say it is the best choice for books about grief.
I wouldn't choose this book for a class read-aloud to discuss loss and grief, but I think having it as an extra resource for children experiencing it would be beneficial. Some may like the more abstract and subtle storytelling of this book, and that the animals serve as metaphors, so I think I would keep it as a resource for children who would like to explore different books about grief.
We all grieve for someone or something, and this book offers us hope we’ll survive. Grief may begin as big and intrusive as an elephant; we’d like to get away from the elephant, but it is too strong. In time, though, you may get away, only to find the grief is still there. This time it’s a bit smaller, and over time a little smaller and a little smaller. Finally, you’re left with the memories and the love.
This empathetic book will help children deal with their feelings of loss; whether it’s a loved one, a pet or a life change. The soft watercolors and the gentle story wrap you in comfort and offer hope. It’s not only for children, but adults too. It’s a story for families, for counselors and anyone dealing with loss. It has a place on my forever shelf.
I love the concept and metaphors in the book. Grief does indeed feel like a heavy elephant at the beginning when it's hard to breathe. But then it shrinks to the size of a deer and later a mouse until it isn't as overwhelming. I found the language less satisfying than I'd hope for and I wondered if the words would be confusing to children. I actually wanted more words and a longer text. "Maybe Tomorrow?" by Charlotte Agell is my favorite kids book about grief/loss and that's what I compare other books to.
I love the concept of this book, but had trouble connecting with the writing & words. I get the animals get smaller and more gentle, but some of the pages didn't make sense to me. Example: "When Grief comes back- she's a fox. Maybe offer her your hand. Then touch the tip of her nose. Touch her small feet. They've traveled so many miles, but they still feel soft, like corduroy." What does this mean in terms of a grief metaphor? *Shrug* I dunno.
Pretty art, and a wonderful concept. Wish I had connected to it more.
This is a fantastic story for sitting with grief and seeing her as a part of our world after experiencing loss. She is a visitor that will come to greet us unexpectedly in many forms. I love the animals as they characterize grief as a presence that isn't to be shunned but to be curious toward - detaching from the all encompassing lack of control manifested in loss.
I think it's great for all ages. It's therapeutic for kids, adults, and elders to explore and remember the love that all is entangled within loss.
WOW! Such a beautiful book! It almost made me cry. The whole book touched my heart, especially this part which talks about the fox: ″Maybe offer her your hand. Then touch the tip of her nose. Touch her small feet. They’ve traveled so many miles, but they still feel soft, like corduroy″ It was so real! I mean look at that! ″They still feel soft″. Just made me want to be kinder and softer with my grief! Hug that and give it time! Time will make it pass! I just really loved this one!*.*

A modern telling of how grief can start, and how as time goes by, it can lessen. By the use of familiar animals and their qualities, Smith made a relatable story, that can be adapted to multiple ages. The illustrations are a bit dreamy and somber, but a nice touch. Colors and details work well, becoming their own character in a way.
It's a nice book to convey what grief is like to our little one, but it's kinda a lil bit implicit for children?
As an adult, I really liked this book. The paintings are beautiful, and it talks about grief in the simplest way for children to understand it. At the beginning, grief may be very big, like an elephant—you may think it will never leave you. But little by little, it gets smaller and smaller, and you will learn to deal with it. Although you may never forget it.
I couldn't finish this one, I can't cry at work! I love the visualization and the engagement with grief in this book - sometimes it's an elephant, imposing and ever present, but sometimes it's smaller, something you can sit with, even engage. Just adore this one for grief of all ages, shapes, and sizes.
WoW is this a stunning picture book. The poetry is gorgeous. The illustrations are a perfect compliment. While this book spoke to my experience with grief more than my six year old's, the animal metaphors were quite powerful.
