While still learning the use of the costume and weapons he has been given, Elliott must track down and stop the first man put on the streets of the city by the same woman - a man with his own warped moral code who relishes killing the criminals he fights, a man who wishes to kill Elliott Cronholm as well, upon learning of Elliott's new role...

Book: Gauntlet

Author: Scott Harper

Genre: Mystery

Publisher: DCL Publications

Rating: Adult

This book revolves around a top secret crime fighting suit. The suit was developed for a SWAT Team and Bomb Team and is resistant to shrapnel, knives and small caliber bullets. It has a gas mask and night vision goggles. It is the perfect form of protection for those who put their lives on the line. But, as with most things, it comes down to money. The suits are too expensive to produce and so the project is scrapped.

Regina Carter, the developer of the suit is not willing to let the project die. She has stolen the two prototypes and has given one of them to a man she believes will use it to help the police and save people. Unfortunately, Jackson Schmidt, the man she believes is the right one for the job turns out to be a killer. Regina has made changes to the suit and it now has all sorts of weapons, weapons Jackson has no problem using. He doesn't follow the rules, assist the police, or help stop crime but he does kill. His very first time with the suit he killed six gang members in cold blood.

Then, out of nowhere, appears a man that Regina is sure would use the suit the right way. His name is Elliott Cronholm, a writer, who while shopping with his girlfriend Rhiannon stops a hold-up. When he is asked to use the suit his response is absolutely no. That no changes when his girlfriend is almost killed by a psychotic woman. He is suddenly facing the possibility of helping others. He will become the Gauntlet. Or will he? His first time out with the suit is a disaster and he doesn't know if you will be able to stop Jackson from continuing his reign of death.

Having a suit like this puts one in a position of always being on the lookout for trouble. It is something that would demand an enormous amount of time, time that would be taken away from family and friends. It is something that Elliott has to consider. Would Rhiannon go along with it? Would she be willing to have his nights taken up by his constant patrolling? There is also the question of whether the police and the FBI will eventually catch Regina. Would Elliott be in trouble by association? There is also the fact that with two men with suits out on the streets it would be impossible to tell the killer from the good guy.

This was a very interesting read. Who doesn't like reading about superheroes in a suit that gives you the power to protect the innocent, while it protects the person wearing it? This is definitely a good vs. evil scenario.

In addition, to the story line about the suits there is also the love story between Elliott and Rhiannon. This back story is wonderful and the two characters are warm loving and devoted.

This is a book well worth a read.
