Leo Politi was born in California and spent most of his childhood in Italy. He was an artist and children's book author. He was especially drawn toward Mexican themes.
This book is a terrible representation of Native Peoples. The "chief costume" the boy wears is not tribally specific, and it mocks the historical importance of headdresses to ACTUAL Native Americans. The idea of "playing Indian" mocks the actual lives of real people. This book is racist and stereotypical.
