Can't argue with a 96 page book. Basically marketing for his other products but I can't blame him. Always churns out great stuff. I'll read anything this man writes.

Brian Tracy - Get Paid More.

The Good: Solid Framework Buried in Generic Advice. Brian Tracy delivers another of his signature "21 ways" listicles, and while it follows his familiar formula, there are genuinely valuable frameworks worth extracting from the cheerful platitudes.

What Actually Works

The job improvement methodology is the standout gem here. Tracy's approach to career development has real merit:

1. Identify your Key Result Areas - What absolutely, positively must you excel at to succeed in your role? This simple question cuts through workplace noise.

2. The One Critical Skill Question - "What one skill, if I developed it excellently, would have the greatest impact on my career?" Ask your boss, mentors, read industry publications, then commit to daily improvement in that area.

3. The 10% Excellence Standard - Decide to be in the top 10% of all key areas. It's ambitious but creates a clear performance target.

The power dynamics breakdown is also surprisingly insightful. Tracy distinguishes between expert power (your expertise), ascribed power (people like working with you), and position power (formal authority). The insight that developing the first two naturally leads to the third is valuable for anyone navigating office politics.

The Customer-Centric Mindset Shift

Tracy's customer orientation framework reframes your entire approach to work. Viewing your boss, colleagues, and actual customers as people whose needs you must understand and exceed is genuinely helpful. The Sam Walton quote about customers being able to "fire us by shopping elsewhere" drives home the point effectively.

Where It Falls Short

This is classic Tracy - heavy on personality prescriptions ("be cheerful," "be highly agreeable") and light on tactical specifics. If you're looking for concrete strategies for salary negotiation, promotion conversations, or skill development techniques, you'll be disappointed.

The affirmation-style advice ("I am responsible for what I earn, I sell my services for a great price") feels dated and oversimplified for today's complex workplace dynamics.

Bottom Line

Worth it for the job improvement methodology, skip the fluff. Extract Tracy's systematic approach to identifying key skills and result areas, implement his customer-focused mindset, and ignore the generic "be positive" advice. The core methodology is sound - it's just buried under layers of self-help clichés.

Best for mid-career professionals who can filter useful frameworks from motivational padding

Skip if you want specific tactics or find generic positivity advice grating

I’m avoiding giving this a rating as I’m on the fence. I think this will be a five star book for some and a two star book for others.

Five stars — people who are young, know what they want, are ambitious, and career-minded will find this book great. It’s full of tactics on improving the probability of you doing well at work.

Two stars — if you’re not particularly ambitious, or have priorities other than work, or are burnt out, this isn’t the book for you (then again the title would probably put you off).

For the rest of us, the tips here are generally great, though sometimes they feel a little dated (there’s hardly a hint of taking care of you’re talking health mentioned, which many career guidance books have nowadays with greater recognition and understanding of mental health issues) and isn’t particularly holistic in its approach — it’s a lot about climbing the ladder, not about whether the ladder’s against the right wall.

Still, I think worthwhile reading especially if you’re a young professional, just certainly not as a stand-alone career book.

This short read is a bulleted list of things to keep in mind for how to get ahead at work. While I think most of the list is solid there are a couple items that may be dated. There are always a couple good ideas from every book that you can take with you and use to make yourself better, even if you've heard them before. I'm grateful that Mr. Tracy made this bite-sized so that I could review it easier.

Nice tips by Mr. Tracy. Here is few best lines from book

"The World has a habit of making room for the man whose words and actions show the he knows where he is going" - Napoleon Hill

"The Very best way to predict the future is to create it" - Peter Drucker

"If you are not continually learning and upgrading your knowledge and skills, somewhere someone else is. and when your meet that person, you will lose" - Reid Buckley (Public Speaking Book)

"We all have one boss, the customer, and he can fire us at any time by simply deciding to shop somewhere else" - Sam Walton (Founder of Wal-Mart)

"Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other one thing" - Abraham Lincoln

ONE GOOD IDEA COULD CHANGE YOUR CAREER.

Practice the Law of Sowing and Reaping. Be a go-giver rather than a go-getter.

When you make other people feel important, they will look for every opportunity to make you feel important as well

The Power is on the side of the person with the best Information.

"What one skill if I developed and did it in an excellent fashion would have the greatest positive impact on my career?" (Brian Tracy, Get Paid More and Promoted Faster)

The 21 Great Ways to Get Ahead In Your Class that Brian Tracy lists and expounds upon in this audio program are:

1. Decide exactly what you want;
2. Select the Right Industry and Company;
3. Select the Right Boss;
4. Develop a positive attitude;
5. Create a positive image;
6. Start earlier, work harder and stay later;
7. Push to the front;
8. Ask for what you want;
9. Guard your integrity as a sacred thing;
10. Be future oriented in your work and your life;
11. Be goal oriented in everything you do;
12. Be result oriented in your activities;
13. Be solution oriented, rather than problem oriented;
14. Be idea oriented in every part of your work;
15. Be people oriented in all of your activities;
16. Be growth oriented;
17. Be excellence oriented;
18. Be customer oriented in your business;
19. Be profit oriented;
20. Develop positive personal power; and
21. Be action oriented.

I think he missed a few, some of them are "going the extra mile", "take all good opportunities that are presented to you", "apply for internal jobs available that interest you"....

Otherwise, this was a good general program for getting promoted in your workplace. I am certain no sane person would show up 1 hour early and 1 hour late a day as he recommends in this program unless they are getting paid. Some employers would exploit this.
