"This is the story of Gatlin's first, and only, Linkubus."

Before we get into this, please allow me to express my rage. Link finally gets his own novella. . . And it's narrated by Ethan?

Excuse me?

Link is literally the only reason I slogged my way through these novels.

And then I find out that his entire novella is told from the perspective of Ethan telling a story about Link - but it's a close telling (i.e. Ethan is stating Link's thoughts)...so begs the question - why not skip the middle-man and just use Link as the narrator of his own story?

Setting aside my indignation - I liked this Link-centric story.

We get a bit of the missing information about how Link became a dream-incubus (a "Linkubus" if you will (oh gosh, I love that. A Linkubus.)).

Trying to hide this from his overly religious-and-righteous mother was hilarious. Anything with that woman just makes me laugh.

"Spending time with questionable folks only gets you a big fat question mark next to your name."

And I really enjoyed his initial freakout phase. As always, I love the little moments where Link just talks about his zany family and all the craziness he endured - like hiding his love of the "devil book" (Harry Potter) or how he learned about sex ed:

"He'd learned all the facts of life the way God had intended, by spying on the girl's locker room next to the unheated swimming pool at church camp."

Overall, an enjoyable read. It was a 5-star story in my book, but 3-stars for the narrator choice. Also, it was SO short (75pgs) that it was over before I knew it - and I wanted more Link!!

Audiobook Comments
Read by Kevin T. Collins - and while his narration (and his "hick" voice for Link) was always spot-on, I was repeatedly thrown when we'd hear "Ethan's" narration for Link's innermost thoughts. It just didn't mesh particularly well.

I think this would have been better told form Link's perspective.
The fact that Ethan know this much about his friends feelings and bodily functions is disturbingly weird.

I'm not sure if this short story has any significance in the bigger scheme of thins, I'll come back and update this review if it is.

Dream Dark is a small splice in the Caster's Chronicles. This short story follows the lovable Link as he begins his metamorphosis into Linkubus or an incubus. I was distraught at the end of Beautiful Darkness when Link was bitten by the half incubus, John Breed. How could you ruin my favorite character? Fear not, fellow Link lovers; our beloved Link is intact and better than ever. As an incubus, Link finally morphs into the muscular, "third degree burns hot", babe magnet that he always aspires to be. Being an incubus does have a catch, he can no longer enjoy delicious, Southern, home cookin' because as an incubus he feeds on the dreams of others. Thankfully, he is not a blood sucking incubus. The tale begins with Link poised on the brink of incubus discovery. I loved getting an up close look at a day in the life of Link, it includes subpar biscuits and gravy, served by his fearsome mother, Mrs. Link, with her put the fear of God into you or else stare, a trip to the doctor for drug testing and a facts of life discussion, as well as his mother's threats and room searches. A classic good time, with all the snarky commentary you love from the series. Even though this is a novella, it has plenty of laughs, just what you expect when it comes to Link.
While I loved this little story short there are a few cautionary bits of info I need to impart.
If you have not yet visited my friends in Gatlin what are you waiting for? Someone to show up at your door and hand you the book? If that is the case, then might I suggest amazon.com; this will bring the book to your door in a cardboard box with a smile. Ok, back on subject, if you have not read the previous two books in the series do not jump in and start with Link's story there are some major spoilers. Second, there is a sneak peak at book three, again you do not want to go there without first going through books one and two. Third, this is a very short little gem, it is around forty pages, so unfortunately it cuts off just when it is getting good. This leaves me to conclude that I need to start reading Beautiful Chaos immediately and that there needs to be a book told from Link's point of view. It was a sticking point for me that this book was narrated by Ethan; that aspect just didn't work for me, it should be in Link's voice. I am certainly excited to see how Link will evolve from here. All hail Linkubus!

Finally, a novella about Link. I like Link. He's one of the few characters that I like in the series from start to finish.

This tells us about how Link became the incubus but it is narrated by Ethan. I didn't mind Ethan narrating it. I also loved Link's relationship with his mother.

Linkubus, I loved it.

This is the story of Gatlin's first, and only, Linkubus.

I approve of this message.

Very short review for a very short story. It's no secret that I'm only still reading these books for Link and Ridley. Beautiful Darkness was a bland 2 star read for me. The only parts which had my interest were any scenes with L & R. So it's no surprise that I enjoyed this L & R short much more than I did an actual book about Ethan and Lena.

In fact, this might be one of those rare occasions in which I'm going to enjoy the movie version of a book series much more than the books themselves (yes folks, the movie has been cast). The setting and atmosphere of this series will lend itself to a beautiful, gothic and haunting style of movie.

Anyway, thumbs up for an entertaining short. I might actually be convinced to try book 3 now if this means more L & R face time.
"You don't need me."
She got up, and he knew she was planning a quick getaway. Link grabbed her arm before she had the chance to run. "I'll always need you, Rid."

Reminds me of the ancient (a.k.a. the 1980's) song from Samantha Fox, Naughty Girls Need Love Too.

I was excited for this story originally because it features one of my favourite characters from the series, Link. And while I did enjoy it, I did think it was a bit pointless and don’t see how it added anything extra to the story. If anything it should have just been slimmed down and added into the end of the second book.

I think that somewhere right about here, this series jumped the shark for me. I'm sorry to say good-bye to my beloved Ethan, but I just don't care for the "who's mortal/immortal in this story?" feel of the plot lines.

This is an example of a series that would've been wonderful as a two-book series.

Good-bye Ethan. Lena, I hope you choose one or the other side or frankly, both if it suits you.

When it comes to the saying "good things come in small packages" nothing rings more true than Dream Dark by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. This mini-novella packs a wallop of a punch because it is full of mystery, laughs and the awesomeness that is Linkcubus.

I adore this series for it's Gothic feel and beautifully descriptive writing for it conjures up the most vivid imagery and makes you feel like sipping sweet tea while hiding out in your closet.

Dream Dark is a mini-novella centering on Link, one of my favorite characters from the Beautiful Creatures series because there is no one around quite like him. I know he is a taco short of a combination plate but to witness his adjustment to being quarter incubus is such a treat that I wished that I could have more to read. I particularly enjoyed Link's interactions with Uncle Macon and ridley and by the end I was left with a foreboding sense of the wicked things to come in Dark Chaos. So, it was a bonus to get a few chapters of Dark Chaos with the Mini-Novella and let me tell you, WOW!!! It is my favorite story so far, dark and oh so mysterious and when I was so hooked and into it, BAM! it was over. NO FAIR, ladies!! LOL!

Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl know how to create a great story that is tension filled while interlaced with moments of comedic relief and romance. Now, I really cannot wait Dark Chaos to hit the shelves because it is going to be epic. I cannot fathom how it is going to come down and that is driving me nuts. October cannot get here fast enough.

If you're a fan of this series (and how could you not be?). Then you need to read Dream Dark so that you can experience the Linkubus for your self and get a taste of the wicked things that are to come.

Dream Dark is a short novella that takes place between the second and third book. It focuses on Link changing and learning about his new self after the event that occurred in the previous book. I really enjoyed this one. I think I prefer Link to Ethan, so I found this one to be a light and fun read. My only major complaint is that this novella was written in a mix between Ethan's POV and a third person POV, which I really found unnecessary; it should've been written in either Link's POV or written completely in third person. Either way this was an enjoyable read for me and if you like Link, don't miss this novella.

Well I guess I can't complain about how short this was (about six chapters) because I mean it is a novella. It was cute and all but it wasn't my favorite. I liked seeing some of the characters again but I'm also really happy that this was just six chapters long. I didn't want more of any of it. I'd rather just stick to the bigger books, the actual books, with all the information about all of the intriguing characters.

DD is a 41 page short story that takes place after beautiful darkness and centers around ethan's best friend, link. this short novella was apparantly released as a separate installment after BD and included early bonus chapters of beautiful chaos. so while DD states it is a 75 page book, it is actually only 41 pages long, and subsequently many GR reviews will reflect disappointment in spending $1.99 on 41 pages. fortunately for me, i got it as a bonus included at the back of my paperback copy of beautiful chaos. unfortunately for me, because it was printed at the back, i read BC first. i would have prefered DD to have been printed at the front of the book, perhaps as a prologue, so that i would have read this in chronological order.
having said all that, this short story was instrumental in helping me crystalize exactly what i love and hate about this series. link is such a fun character, it is enjoyable to have the story focus on him (and ridley) more. i think the authors could and should have simply incorporated scenes from this novella into beautiful darkness and beautiful chaos. i'm not sure if the authors were afraid of taking focus off of ethan and lena, but it is pretty telling that many readers find link and ridley's characters and relationship more engaging. shamefully, there is more action, more meaningful dialogue, more character development, and more plot twists in this 41 page installment than you read in the average 500+ page main books. this series would be more exciting and the storyline more memorable if the series was written and paced as well as DD. sadly, this novella only serves to highlight many of the authors' weaknesses. DD should have been written in link's POV. it reads as a few random scenes strung together and called a novella. there is no focus or cohesion. and that is when it dawned on me: the caster chronicles resemble a soap opera more than a novel. we tune in to follow our likeable characters and see what happens today, but there is no skillful plot sequencing or development of characters or relationships for it to fall into a classic romance or action book. maybe it could have been called "as the moon turns" or "one moon at a time".

This short story must been better if it is written in Link's point of view rather than Ethan.

Ethan may know a lot about Link but I don't understand why he can transcribe in details what happen in the tunnel and beyond. I guess they are that close...?

Anyway, it's a good read...

This was a great novella. I am enjoying Link and Ridley's new relationship and interested to see where it goes, and now awaiting the final battles against Abraham and Sarafine in the last two books.

When I read Beautiful Creatures, I was amazed. After reading the second book, Beautiful Darkness, I wasn’t as pleased. My main problem with the second book in the Beautiful Creatures series was Lena, but I started Dream Dark with a fresh mind, knowing that this short story featured Link, who has always been one of my favorite characters from the series.

Dream Dark tells the story of Link, rowdy, love-stricken teen boy and his transformation to an incubus, completely unaware of what lies ahead for him now that he is immortal. Link soon finds help and guidance in the form of Macon, incubus turned caster. I loved reading Link’s story which takes place between Beautiful Darkness and the upcoming third book in the series, Beautiful Chaos.

If you haven’t read the first two Beautiful Creatures novels, I would not recommend reading Dream Dark, as it does contain some major spoilers for newcomers. However, if you have read both Beautiful Creatures and Beautiful Darkness, reading Dream Dark is an essential.

This was a really short story giving more insight on how Link dealt with being an Incubus. I'm not the hugest fan of this series, but I did find this book very interesting. It's nice to see how he dealt with it and it was oddly amusing seeing how Link's family thought about his new abilities.

My only complaint would be that this is from Ethan's point of view, which doesn't really make much sense. I would have preferred to see this fro Link's perspective.

Anyway, this novella isn't necessary for you to read, but if you would like to look more into the Caster Chronicles.

List of my Top5 all time favorite series:

1. The Hunger Games
2. Fever
3. Vampire Academy
4. Caster Chronicles
5. Jessica Darling series

So yeah, my love for Casters' world is pretty damn big. And considering there are only four books in the series, of course I'll use any chance I have to read a few extra pages about it. Can't say I was completely pleased with this novella (or it's lenght), but it did give me that intense feeling under my skin I get every time I read these books.
Solid story overall.

Even this short story was not what I expected, I would have preferred Link to speak for himself and not to hear Ethan's narration as it was quite boring. I will continue to finish reading this series as I hope it might get better, but I must say I have surely read better books than this series

So it's been awhile since I've read anything from this series and I was about to start the third one when I saw that there was this novella. So of course, I had to read it first. And let me just say, aside from the very last page, this novella really didn't do anything at all.

The novella follows Link from realizing he can no longer eat his mothers breakfast to being tested for steroids to finally uncovering a plot of sorts (which I'm sure will take more effect in the next book). I mean, if you're a huge fan of Link, then this is the novella for you! Otherwise, just read the last few pages and you'll get the main point.

Dream Dark is a short story where the setting is after Beautiful Darkness and before Beautiful Chaos. The story told fro Link's point of view after he turns into Quarter-Incubus.

Basically, this is quite page turner and fun, because Link is fun character. But I thought there's more Linkubus action or something. It's only about Link is still figuring out what power he has by counseling to Macon Ravenwood.

Also, sending a letter to Obidias Trueblood and get to know that the Mortal world is about to end.

From the first sentence of any of the Caster Chronicles books, you instantly feel like you're amongst friends and you're home. And in this short story taking place between last year's Beautiful Darkness and the upcoming Beautiful Chaos, you step right back into the thick of things in Gatlin and get reacquainted with Ethan, Lena, ex-Siren Ridley, and new Incubus Link.

Ethan's best friend, Link was bitten at the end of Beautiful Darkness by John Breed, and Dream Dark follows his transformation from regular, quirky guy to an irrestible , ladies man Incubus. With the help of back from the dead ex-Incubus Uncle Macon, Link must learn to cope with not only the physical changes that he goes through -- the increase in height, the muscle gain -- but also, the inability to eat normal food.

Authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl inject plenty of humor in this short story while projecting a vivid setting full of the sights, sounds, and smells of the South. While the story focuses on Link's path to becoming the "Linkubus" (I love that nickname, btw), you get a glimpse of how Ridley is adjusting to life as a human, as well as how Lena's claiming herself as both light and dark has brought the plagues on Gatlin.

I give this short story a solid 5 out of 5. It's a quick, entertaining read that whets your appetite for more. I loved Link before, but I'm totally in love with the Linkubus now. And you get to read the first several chapters of Beautiful Chaos, which left me really wishing it was October already!

I am not going to lie but I was expecting it to be just a little bit longer. Well at least by looking at what page I finished the book on my nook at, I was expecting a little bit more but I could have actually read more.

However, I like being able to read from another character’s perspective. I feel that when we are able to do this, we are able to see what is happening from not only a different side of it but also get a different opinion sometimes. And I am glad that we are able to get a side from Link’s journey.
Link is Ethan’s best friend who kind of gets involved with the whole situation going on with Lena and evil trying to take over, and all that good vs. evil randomness that we all know so well. However, things take a turn when Link is bit by a hybrid that turns Link into an incubus. So in this short novella, we are transported into Link’s mind as we begin to understand some changes that are happening with him.

We get a little glimpse of his somewhat of a relationship with Ridley after her powers are taken from her as well as the darkness inside of her. We see the tension build up between them and so I am interested to see where this leads in the books to follow.

Overall, this proved exciting and the end left you wondering even more about what events will come that will lead to the message Link hears.

Happy Reading!

What do you do when you wake up one morning, and you've become an Incubus? You can't stand the smell of food, you've grown taller and stronger overnight, and it's not like you can find a pamphlet somewhere.

This is the situation Wesley "Link" Lincoln now finds himself. After his oh-so-mortal mom drags him to see the doctor--and have Link tested for steroid abuse--Link finally consults somebody who knows: his girlfriend's Uncle Macon, himself a former Incubus. Turns out, it's really not that difficult.

One day, Macon sends Link on a secret errand. What happens along the way, as Link faces challenges he'd never imagined, give him the best clue of all as to his new nature.

"Dream Dark" is a short story explaining Link's transformation. As you might guess from the subtitle, "Caster Chronicles, #2.5," you should indeed read this between books two and three.

It's a cool-enough little story, and we get to know the new Link a little. How it relates to Book 3, I couldn't tell you yet. However, my experience has been that when authors put supplements between books, these supplements usually contain information enhancing the next book.

Who am I to argue?

I wanted to read this short story as an ending of the Caster Chronicles... I didn't I would like this side of the story more than the actual story.

This is the short story of the one and only Linkubus, i always liked this character in the story because it brings the human part, with this I don't mean that Ethan is not human but he is so in love that he sometimes forgets it... that is when Link comes around.

To hear the transformation from the Link part s very good because is real and written in a very teenage way, the way he expresses of his mother, her food, his dad... you can easily relate to him. And the love story that Ridley and Link have going on.. I like it even more than the one of Ethan and Lena.

The only bad thing that this short story has is that it is only a short story and not a whole book. Let's just hope that the author's take mercy on us poor readers hungry for more of Linkubus.

These little "novellas" are starting to get annoying. I read this in 30 minutes. And it feels like a waste of the $1.99 to amazon. The preview of the next full length book was longer. And if I need the few facts that were learned in this little detour then we should just get them in one of the longer books. For those who agree that a book that takes less than an hour to read isn't worth it visit my blog over the next few days and I will tell you all you need to know from this book there! The details themselves and theorizing weren't bad so the 2-star rating isn't because of that... It's because of the length to cost ratio. Shame the publishers for charging for the 50 measly pages.
