The fifth-grade class election is shaping up as a close contest between class clown Lucas Cott and onetime teacher's pet Cricket Kaufman. It's just possible that the student with the greatest leadership ability is Julio Sanchez, but Julio's too busy running Lucas's campaign to notice. Or is he? And how can Julio throw his hat into the ring without betraying his best friend?
Johanna Hurwitz introduced Julio, Cricket, and Lucas in Class Clown and Teacher's Pet, earning a ringing vote of confidence from Publisher's Weekly: "Hurwitz masterfully demonstrates why she is one of the premier practitioners of the humorous school story genre."
In Class President, she has backed these delightful characters with a winning ticket of humor and insight.
I love that Julio and his two older brothers are well behaved and work hard in school despite the absence of a father figure. (So many stories use that as a starting point for a problem novel). And even though it might be a bit unrealistic, I also love that Lucas and the class do the right thing by him, because he deserves it! The pacing is quick and the voice is true to life. It was also quite funny.
I read this book to my son, who wants to be class president and also President of the United States someday. We didn't love this book. I think we've just already outgrown it or something. We enjoyed the bake sale part and we liked the ending, and we were glad one of the kids' moms wasn't as mean (not sure if mean is the word) as she at first seemed. The ending was satisfactory, too.
The fifth grade elections are coming up and there are two candidates: Lucas and Cricket. Julio finds himself in the middle of the election madness when he shows his leadership skills regarding two playground problems: Arthur's broken glasses and the banning of soccer during recess.
Class President is the third in the series by Johanna Hurwitz. The first two are Class Clown and Teacher's Pet. It is the only book in the series I've read but I would read others if I ran into them.
Hurwitz makes good use of the 100 pages to develop her characters. We learn about Julio Sanchez, his family and what it's like to be Puerto Rican. The book is entertaining and informative without being preachy.
Class Presidnt is a book for kids about seven to eleven. The main genre for this book is realistic fiction. The theme is about how friends use teamwork to solve thier problems. Julio the main Character is a responsible and a hard working student, he is wanting to run for class president. It is a book about responsible students that show compassion and hard work to make money for a student. Class President is a great book for kids who enjoy reading realistic fiction. The book will motivate you to become a great kid and to help others. It also talks about team work and how to work together as a class or with a friend.
This is a short chapter book so it's a quick read, but it's a good one about self-confidence and friendship. I like that Hurwitz has different characters be the lead characters in her books. This time it was Julio, Lucas' best friend who usually doesn't get much page time. Julio wants to be class president, but he doesn't want to be the one to let everyone know it. Luckily, he some good friends that recognize his potential and nominate him for the position. Will we win or will Cricket, the girl who proclaimed in third grade that she would one day be the first female president of the United States win the election?
Julio is very excited about the start of the fifth grade and having a teacher new to the school. The kids seem to like Mr. Flores and he comes up with the idea of having a class president. Although Julio is interested he is afraid to say that he will run for the position. Several things happen before the election and Julio and his classmates realize that he is a natural leader. I think that this is a great book for younger readers just beginning with chapter books.
Of course, this book is under my grade level, but I still enjoyed it. It had drama, humor and much more. It a little weaknesses, such has being able to use advance vocabulary. But besides that everything was good. I also thought the author was able to really set the character. By that I mean it was able to really give the character significant characteristics. Once again I really did enjoy this book.
This book is about the class clown running, Lucas, for president against the teachers pet, Cricket. Although Lucas's best friend is doing his campaign he may be the one more qualified to be the class president. You could use this book to talk about elections and the process used.
I read this to Cole and Lainie. The book was maybe a little dated, but I liked the main character and I liked that the author instilled some good values in the book through the story.
Nice short read. It was great! Not the kind of book I usually read (a book with no romance?! BLASPHEMY.) but I really liked it (and I think it was for kids, haha). :D
This book is really boring. I did not like it because it is basically directed to 4th graders, the writing is very simple, I do not recommend it to any 17 year old.
