Beautiful art might distract you from the fact that Prince Valiant is really well written. This volume wraps up a big saga and then is a mix of smaller stories. It mixes some history, Arthurian legend, comedic romps and old school adventure.
Plus, Valiant and his wife, Theta, are one of the greatest couples in comics. Equal partners, both are smart and capable, just with different strengths and they love, trust and respect each other. They make mistakes, but they feel like the kind of mistakes a real couple would make.
Galahad getting his friend in trouble, because he's constantly chasing women, wears little thin. Also, Hal Foster loves a comedy relief servant, which be annoying if they weren't all actually funny and used well in the story.
This is a series it took me forever to get around to and each volume makes me understand why it's considered a classic.
The incredible artwork of Hal Foster makes these a true treasure to read. Being able to go through a year's worth of the Sunday strips is fantastic. Awesome story and incredible art make these books get my highest recommendation.
