President Hinckley was known, even at the age of 95, as a tireless leader who always put in a full day at the office and traveled extensively around the world to mix with Church members, now numbering nearly 13 million in 171 nations.

His quick wit and humor, combined with an eloquent style at the pulpit, made him one of the most loved of modern Church leaders. A profoundly spiritual man, he had a great fondness for history and often peppered his sermons with stories from the Church’s pioneer past.

He was a popular interview subject with journalists, appearing on 60 Minutes with Mike Wallace and on CNN’s Larry King Live, as well as being quoted and featured in hundreds of newspapers and magazines over the years. During the Salt Lake Olympics of 2002, his request that the Church refrain from proselytizing visitors was credited by media with generating much of the goodwill that flowed to the Church from the international event.

In recent years, a number of major developments in the Church reflected President Hinckley’s personal drive and direction. In calling for 100 temples to be in operation before the end of the year 2000, the Church president committed the Church to a massive temple-building program.

In 1999 — 169 years after the Church was organized by its founder, Joseph Smith — the Church had 56 operating temples. Three years later that number had doubled, largely because of a smaller, highly practical temple architectural plan that delivered these sacred buildings to Church members in far-flung parts of the world. Many more Church members can now experience the sacred ceremonies that occur only in temples, including marriages for eternity and the sealing of families in eternal units.

President Hinckley was the most traveled president in the Church’s history. His duties took him around the world many times to meet with Latter-day Saints in more than 60 countries. He was the first Church president to travel to Spain, where in 1996 he broke ground for a temple in Madrid; and to the African nations of Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Cape Verde, where he met with thousands of Latter-day Saints in 1998. In 2005, he traveled nearly 25,000 miles on a seven-nation, nine-day tour to Russia, South Korea, China, Taiwan, India, Kenya, and Nigeria.

At a general conference of Church members in April 2001, President Hinckley initiated the Perpetual Education Fund — an ambitious program to help young members of the Church (mainly returning missionaries from developing countries) receive higher education and work-related training that they would otherwise likely never receive.

Closer to his Salt Lake City home, President Hinckley announced the construction of a new Conference Center in 1996 and dedicated it four years later. Seating 21,000 people, it is believed to be the largest religious and theater auditorium in the world and has become the hub for the Church’s general conference messages to the world, broadcast in 54 languages.

Even before his term as president, President Hinckley’s extensive Church service included 14 years as a counselor in the First Presidency, the highest presiding body in the government of the Church, and 20 years before that as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

President Hinckley was born 23 June 1910 in Salt Lake City, a son of Bryant Stringham and Ada Bitner Hinckley. One of his forebears, Stephen Hopkins, came to America on the Mayflower. Another, Thomas Hinckley, served as governor of the Plymouth Colony from 1680 to 1692.

President Hinckley’s first job was as a newspaper carrier for the Deseret News, a Salt Lake City daily. After attending public schools in Salt Lake City, he earned a bachelor of arts degree at the University of Utah and then served two years as a full-time missionary for the Church in Great Britain. He served with distinction and ultimately was appointed as an assistant to the Church apostle who presided over all the Europe

I love having these little gems handy. I use it for FHE a lot. It is dated, 365 quotes. I like going to todays date and it seems like the quote is written for that specific day in my life.

I also love the way this book feels. It is small and chubby with a padded cover.

It make s a great gift, also....

I started reading this 365 day devotional at the beginning of the year to start off my day with something inspirational.

Ironically, President Hinckley just passed away, but he'll still be with me each day before I leave my home.

It was a Christmas gift when I met the prophet while on my mission. I love daily scripture and spiritual thought, perfect for days when you don't have time to read as much scripture as you like.

What an uplifting compilation of Gordon B. Hinckley quotes. I intended to read it a bit at a time, but ended up going through it in just a few days because it was so full of soul-feeding optimism and hope.

Really fun to do these daily readings every year. Can't believe I've done this since 2020 I believe or so. Maybe since 2019. Either way, can't wait to reread this again as well as the other two now I've been working on.
More rereads!

I love Gordon B. Hinckley. This book gives such wonderful and uplifting advice as to how we should live our lives. God, Christ, and the gospel, should be the center of our lives.

A book of counsel for daily meditations from a now deceased president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormons), who served as the prophet for many years. A dear, wise man. The scriptures included with his quotes are culled from the Holy Bible (the King James version), the Book of Mormon (an ancient record found in America and translated by Joseph Smith with divine help circa 1830), the Doctrine and Covenants (a record of revelations, doctrines, and history for the restoration of the Gospel of Christ and founding of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).

An example of one counsel from January:

The Temple and Immortality

Herein is glory and honor, and immortality and eternal life. - Doctrine and Covenants 128:12

"The temple is concerned with things of immortality. It is a bridge between this life and the next. All of the ordinances that take place in the house of the Lord are expressions of our belief in the immortality of the human soul." - Gordon B. Hinckley

This is a short devotional-type book. My husband and I would read a little of it before we went to bed. Every day has a scripture and then a short quote from President Hinckley. Not a scripture-reading replacement, obviously, but a nice little book to have.

It was given to us as a gift (I think). I'm not much into books that you have to read page-by-page throughout the whole year. I just forget to read it and then it's "Oh, it's June now and my bookmark is in March. I'm a loser."

I haven't read every page of this, but I can gaurantee that every page is uplifting and worth your read!

I've decided recently to try this book again. I have no issue with it, or its contents. I love Gordon Hinckley. It's a great little book with great little thoughts.

My rating is more an indictment of the style. I have never been one that loves the 365 day inspirational message type book. It feels like it should be in calendar form, and I'd flip through it as eagerly as a Far Side or Most Amazing Facial Hair calendar.

I just wish this book was in narrative form, and a tad more substantive. We'll see how it goes the second time around, and please don't doubt the validity of the message (an excellent one) because of the averageness of my rating.

I LOVED this book! This book is filled with uplifting and ispirational quotes to get us though for EVERY day of the year. We read it as a family, each quote in the morning BEFORE we would pray. Again, I know the prophets are called of God.

Everyone should read this book!

I am not quite sure when I actually started to read the book but as a family we have read it over and over again!
Love this book!

Hi Friends!

I really liked this little daily thought book. The thoughts are very positive and uplifting, just like President Hinckley was...and I am sure still is! I read it at a time when a lot of things were going very well in my life (things are still fine), and it was an inspiration to start each day with a thought. You can actually start at anytime because it just goes throughout the whole year, and then you can start over! I highly recommend it, he is a great teacher!

Thanks!

Daily reader. Each day has a small scripture plus a quote from the Prophet. Some of the quotes I found had nothing to do with the scripture, IMO, which is really just a reflection of the editor. I like a little more in-depth study, but overall, a decent book if you just want to skim the surface. I wouldn't buy it again in hindsight. I got much more from "Teachings of Gordon B. Hinckley" in 2 volumes.

I didn't exactly read this book "on schedule" (it has one thought for each day of the year) but I still thoroughly enjoyed all the quotes by the Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley and corresponding scriptures. I loved reading all the simple reminders about how to improve and focus on what's really important.

I read this book a long time ago. I need to dig it out and re-read it as a positive thought for the day. I am putting this on my list of things to do so I won't forget to do it! President Hinckly was one of my favorite prophets. He had such a way of communication that included a little humor that I really enjoyed.

I read this book back in 2005 and I distinctly remember sitting in an airport in Salt Lake City waiting for my flight and just feeling like this was the most profound book. I was totally prepared to hand my copy to any person who asked what it was. I think I gave away several copies of it for Christmas that year.
Highly highly recommend.

Loved this book! Read it ages ago, but so worth all the information, thoughts and quotes. Truly if you self-examine yourself, and are a thoughtful person, it really is for anyone like that. The challenge to become better, to help others can be so meaningful and this will inspire you to do that! One of my favorite books!

This is the type of book where you read a little snipit each day and I am bad at doing that. I really like this book overall, but I don't typically like books like this because they are too labor intensive. I only read it because it is counsel from the Prophet.

I love this little book; I can pick it up at any time, find today's date and get a little nugget of wisdom, hope and encouragement. When I miss President Hinckley, especially during General Conference, I pull out this little volume and give myself a dose. Lovely.

James Here! Read this book too. It is not a novel but more like a daily quote book for each day of the year. I first started reading it in the mission field and have returned for some daily reminders that the Gospel of Jesus Christ really is the only thing that matters.

This is a great book for a daily thought that our family likes to read along with our daily scripture study. Or sometimes if we don't get to scriptures until the evening then this is a good quick thought for the morning to start the day.
