35 books19 followersJim Toomey is an internationally published humor writer and syndicated cartoonist best known as the creator of the popular comic strip Sherman’s Lagoon, published daily in over 150 newspapers including The Washington Post, the San Francisco Chronicle and the Chicago Tribune. Jim has produced 28 Sherman’s Lagoon books, published by Andrews McMeel, and most recently a travel memoir, entitled Family Afloat, about his two years sailing the world’s oceans with his wife and family.
Sherman's Lagoon combines two of his lifelong interests: art and the sea. In addition to drawing his comic strip, Jim is active in ocean conservation and serves on several nonprofit boards, including the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. Jim has given talks at a variety of venues, including the Royal Society in London, Harvard University and twice at TED. The conservation message in his comic strip earned him the Environmental Hero Award in 2000, presented by NOAA “for using art and humor to conserve and protect our marine heritage.” Jim won the award again in 2010.
Jim holds degrees from Duke and Stanford. He currently lives in Annapolis, Maryland, with his wife and two children, where he tries to get his family back on a sailboat as frequently as possible but can rarely make it happen.

25 year old comic collection. Somewhat dated - references to Clinton as president, grunge, Melrose Place, O.J. Simpson trial (and all the characters), and the early days of the Internet ("What is an e-mail?")
But, like many of the previous books, some of the strips are timeless and amusing no matter what decade you read them.

I reread this nearly every year at the family vacation cabin. I always crack up out loud and have to run to show my cousins the funny joke. This is a great and absurd comic book.

Jim Toomey is a hidden gem in the world of comic strip humor books. I love telling people about his books because I know they'll love them and become great fans. Filled with underwater humor for both adults and kids, this book and series of books will make a great addition to any library's collection. Seeing things from the viewpoint of sharks, sea turtles, crabs, and other interesting creatures, you get to see the world from a carnivores point of view!

This was hilarious!
Yet another comic that a friend suggested that was never published in our newspaper.
NEWSPAPER you scream?!?!
That's right folks... there was a time when we had to see our comics on paper and ink on a daily basis and pay for it.
Our newspaper got Garfield and not much else.
So, thank you ALICIA for a good rec!
My hubz even wants to read this one!
