This book is about third grade girls and their friendships. It was ok. Not very exciting. The plot was very thin: the main character hurts her best friend's feelings, but with her mom's guidance, apologizes and everything is better again.

There are an unexpected number of references to what girl characters are wearing. I guess some little girls are into clothes...

There's also this gem: "...we both want to be scientists when we grow up. Pretty ones, with awesome clothes." I guess we should all aspire to be pretty and well dressed. Geez!

In this fourth installment in the Emma chapter book series, Emma completely forgets a planned outing with her best friend, something they have both been happily anticipating for weeks, when a new girl joins her class. While I can certainly understand wanting to impress a new friend, and possibly even going overboard to do it, it seems unlikely to me that Emma would completely forget her current best friend in the process. Ignore her friend's needs on a temporary basis - maybe. But not totally dropping her BFF for someone else, especially not after that happened to Emma herself in a previous book. Emma seems too smart and considerate to behave in a completely contradictory manner from her typical personality.

Since Emma wants to be a nature scientist when she grows up, animal facts are tucked into insets periodically throughout the book, where that animal is mentioned.

A very strong reminder of the petty, yet life-or-death need to make new friends

Emma is in a fierce competition with Cynthia to win Kry's friendship; however, she does it at the expense of almost losing her current best friend Annie Pat. This story deals with the friendships and angst of being in third grade. Both Emma and Kry have parents that are divorced and Cynthia uses that information against Emma - almost like it is a disease or something. The story never directly corrects Cynthia's perception and the reader is left feeling that it should.

The book showed a basic lesson in friendship among third grade girls. When a new girl is added to Emma's third grade class she is determined to gain an additional best friend. In the process she hurts her best friend Annie Pat. Once she faces her mistake and apologizes, she and Annie Pat are back on good terms and the third grade girls are back to being themselves.

Once again, these girls are really unpleasant to each other which, although it may happen in real life, doesn't make for enjoyable reading. I was expecting a resolution between two of the girls, & it didn't happen.

This book was alright, but not outstanding. It does teach girls that you should be loyal to your friends and apologize when you've done something wrong.
