Not everyone gets a second chance at life, a chance for redemption. Susan does. She's given the rarest of gifts. The chance to find happiness again.
Susan was a content thirty-five-year-old. She thought her life was perfect. In an instant, it changed. She wakes, in 2166, one hundred and thirty-one years later. She's brought out of a deep freeze her husband placed her in after an accident. She finds herself emotionally alone and trying to adapt to her new world. She realizes her past life wasn't so perfect.
Three descendants of her late husband care for her when she wakes. Joor, 15, is a brilliant and emotionally calming force, but immature. Parentless, and raising his sister, he needs Susan as much as she needs him. Mara, 7, is a vibrant, smart child with an innocent honesty. The extraordinarily intelligent children of the future run the world. Parents retire at twenty. Grandma Emily, 90, becomes a maternal figure to Susan. Grandma's also a skeptic. She urges Susan, Joor, and Mara to solve a one-hundred-year-old mystery. Earth's civilization lives in airtight homes and can't go outside. The homes protect them from a virus brought back from a mission to Mars. They set out to discover if the virus is a real threat, or if they're being lied to.
Over a few turbulent days the four bond and fill voids they didn't know were missing from their lives. Susan learns of their advanced medical technology and how Joor used it to heal her. Future Earth is different. People live in small, tight-knit communities and lead somewhat mundane lives. Susan's arrival threatens to disrupt their ways.
