The Vietnam War

Rate this book
The Vietnam War killed over 58,000 Americans and approximately 2 million Vietnamese and left deep scars on the American national conscience. This anthology presents primary documents tracing the development of American intervention in Southeast Asia from Ho Chi Minh's 1945 declaration of Vietnamese independence to the fall of Saigon. Included is material documenting the impact of the 1954 Geneva Convention, the American military buildup that followed the 1964 Gulf of Tokin incident, the antiwar movement at home, and the Vietnamization of the war and the quest for peace with honor.

The book was very insightful to the Vietnam war and enlightened my on many topics that I would otherwise not know anything about. The book delves into the darkest corners of the Vietnam war, highlighting the many faults of American involvement in the south.

The book also covers the complex history of Vietnam and the Vietnamese struggle for independence that goes far beyond the war. I started this book halfway through September and finished by the 6th of October and was thrilled with the amount of information I absorbed

The book also covers the stark divide between life in North vs. South Vietnam, one ruled by an oppressive communist party, the other by oppressive dictators. Nick Treanor tastefully depicts the war in a light that shows the fault on both sides whilst giving the reader what life in Vietnam looked like for civilians and soldiers alike.

The book is immersive and puts into perspective how much a mistake Vietnam was. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to expand their knowledge on the dark period of American history known as the Vietnam War.

In summary, The Vietnam War is an engaging and somber tale of the pitfalls of American democracy and a tale of warning, so that these mistakes will not be repeated in the future. The book gives a good perspective and a great summary of the war compiled into 234 pages. Highly recommend.
