About the author

Willem Johannes Theodorus Kloos was a nineteenth-century Dutch poet and literary critic. He was one of the prominent figures of the Movement of Eighty and became editor in chief of De Nieuwe Gids after the editorial fracture in 1893. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times.

Het begon ijzersterk met zeemzoete, dweeperige sonnetten over liefde, de dood en de plaats van het individu in de maatschappij. Het eindigde echter met stilistische verfijnde scheldpartijen die je, als lezer, meer vervreemden van Kloos dan entertainen.

Het is gewoon een prachtige verzameling gedichten, en velen blijven nog tijden in je hoofd hangen. Willem Kloos weet op meesterlijke manieren zijn emoties, noem het gevoelens - te beschrijven, te verwerken met een hele boel creatieve metaforen. Het enige minpuntje, vind ik, zijn de dramatische stukken uit de oudheid, ze zijn te langdradig en simpel gezegd: saai. Over de sonnetten heb ik geen kwaad woord om over te spreken, dus zeker een aanrader voor degene met een beetje interesse voor dhr. Kloos.
