The beginning of the end of the plains Indians. Once the mass slaughter of buffalo began there soon became a time that the food that Indians had for hundreds of years was gone because of white man's greed. They wanted the buffalo skins for hats and coats. Then they wanted the lands the Indians had lined in for a thousand years. This novel is the beginning of the end as far as free India's were concerned. Unlike Canada the United States weighed in every peace treaty written. Unfortunately, this was genocide of the Indian way of life and limb. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

This one won the Western Heritage Award as Best western novel of the year, in 1968. I liked it OK but didn't find it compelling.
