3.5+ Winston Leyland edited and published around 25 collections of gay male comics/cartoons in book form (1989-2002). One could easily dismiss them as just pornography. But although in most cases quite sexually graphic, they are also an important piece of gay male history of the times.
The strips and cartoons vary in quality, often depending on taste. In this volume, Zack's beautiful artwork graces the cover and the first chapter of his classic Bike Boy adventures. Pity it's all in black and white as the original color work is sensational (my review of Bike Boy and other Zack books are on the site).
There are ten other artists featured in this collection. Highlights for me were John Blackburn's longish tale of cynical male model Coley and his encounter on the beach with an art student, the exquisite drawings of "Mike" with his "Maneater" strip, "Joe" and what goes on in the workshop after hours in the explosive "Driveshaft" and seventeen pages containing the very witty, very clever and timeless cartoons of Gerard Donelan.
