So. Much. Description. I would not say this is a setting-driven book, but it is definitely very description heavy. I admit that my own preferences do not trend toward description--I prefer plot and character. This was hard to slog through, even in audiobook, and I felt my attention wandering quite often. Ultimately, this is a character-driven book that is extremely heavy on description. Take out the description (or at least trim it a lot--did we need a whole chapter on chowder?), and you have a well-paced man vs. nature story with sharp wit and occasionally brilliant dialogue.
It's an abridged, condensed version of Moby Dick with an audio CD used as a method of learning English. This is another way to discover this wonderful book for non-English speakers. The result is remarkable and I really liked it
