I didn't enjoy this as much as I hoped. I just found the story line very unbelievable and as much as I feel really bad about saying this, I couldn't stand the main character. I just found him really annoying.
Would a boy of that age, especially the son of someone that high up in the army, in Nazi Germany really have no idea about the war and what was happening? Didn't children have to attend the Hitler Youth Movement groups (or whatever they were called)? And he knew his friend was starving and still ate most of the food on the way to see him. Rant over - just made me really angry at his selfishness and naivety.
It was a good story and I would recommend reading it, I was just left feeling empty and guilty because I didn't feel as sad as I felt I should do considering the ending.
A different perspective on war-torn Germany that reminds us that children are borne along without any say-so in whatever adults do. Children are also left in the dark about the whys and where-fors of what adults do, and if untainted by adult evil-prejudices will accept and see people for who they are and not what baggage and burdens are placed upon them.
A very sad conclusion, and a fitting end for the family, but one wonders if lessons are learnt.
Excellent and non bias view of what it was like on both sides of the fence, was pretty amazing. I really enjoyed reading it and so did my mum despite both being different ages. It's for anyone, aimed at anyone and really opens up everyone's eyes. It's devastating but worth reading, definitely!
it was a good book building up to sad ending that will make you want to cry but the movie is just as moving and you get so much more attached to the character Bruno and his friend shummel
