Christmas in Virginia

Rate this book
Christmas In Virginia By Mlyn Hurn Laena is happy as a live-in companion to Ruth Spencer. Surviving a nasty divorce, she needs the isolation living in the farmhouse provides. The quiet allows her space to heal, and she can pursue her real love—pottery. Then Ruth's eldest son returns home for the holiday season. Jack Spencer, a widower with twin sons in college, has no plans for entanglements of the romantic kind. Within minutes of his arrival, he is inundated with complaints from the females of his family and stunned by the reactions of the males to his mother's companion. Nothing prepared him for the sexy, beautiful Laena. With his libido going into overdrive, his common sense tries to warn him off, but her allure is too strong. Jack quickly pursues Laena and discovers a depth of love and passion that he's never known before. Laena succumbs to his sensual onslaught, but knows Jack isn't interested in "ever after" with her. They come from such different worlds and her failed marriage causes her to doubt a happy ending. When fate steps in, they are forced to look at the bigger picture and discover if their love is strong enough to overcome their differences.

A resident of Indiana, Mlyn worked as a registered nurse for 23 years in pediatrics. Reading Barbara Cartland and Harlequin romance novels in high school spurred her to start writing. She did technical writing for her employers until she started writing erotica four years ago. Mlyn is single and lives with her cranky cat Georgia, who she named after her favorite artist for inspiration, Georgia O’Keeffe.

I enjoyed this story very much for the most part. It's a nice change to read about an ambitious older hero who was previously married and had adult sons, and I liked how he didn't fight his attraction to Laena. Although Laena had her own bad experiences to deal with, she wasn't a doormat, and she also was mature enough to know her own mind. Jack and Laena's romance was 'normal'; no mystery, no great adventure, no huge secrets. Just two people who were at their own crossroads who unexpectedly fell in love. The sex was really good; not too vanilla, but not way out kinky either. My only real gripe about this story was the weak and unsatisfying epilogue, which wasn't about the main couple but rather the family members instead. 3.5 stars.
