Blizzards are hazardous to deal with. I found this book very informative on this issue. In 1886 and 1887, the winters were scary in North and South Dakota, but the next winter was even worse. More than 500 people died, and many farm animals as well. In New York City and Delaware, the temperatures dropped tremendously, sinking 200 ships. "The blizzard raced up the east coast at 80 miles an hour." It killed 400 people. As recently as 1993, a blizzard hit an area from Vermont to Florida. Weather forecasters are constantly on alert for blizzards, and we should be as well.

This book is very informational without being overwhelming. It teaches good vocabulary that children can apply in their lives and is a text that numerous children can connect with. It is not a stellar piece of literature by any means, but if you need a good informational text for children or adults reading on about a 2nd grade level, I would recommend this.

I thought the information in this book was great and liked that it told about specific big blizzards as well as basic info on them. Illustrations and maps are helpful.
