For the past 15 years I've referred to this book for guidance. One may instantly recognize that the specific colors used in this guide seem outdated. They were from the moment the book was published. Designers tweak these basic combinations constantly, reinventing our world through advertising daily.

The purpose of this book, for me, was to put me near the target. By refining these basic ideas, one can achieve a more current theme. Or, destroy it altogether. With billions of color choice it is easy to stray.

That's why I like this as a guide. For the occasional palette designer, this book does the trick.

I was happy to get this book in the color harmony series in good condition and for a good price. I know I will find the many, well-categorized color palette suggestions and illustrations very useful, and of course I the appreciate CMYK code for each one of the colors that's in the back of the book.

Each of us is captive to time, place, and culture, but Bride Whelan's commentary on each color type (classic, rich, light, friendly, for example) comes across as unnecessarily dogmatic and almost silly--somehow stuck in North America in the 1990s. However, that's a small quibble regarding a compact, well-bound handbook that I expect to reference often.

If you are a designer or if you are in business you should get this book. It will help you design your ad campaign. I use it to create my website, brochures and business cards in a coordinated fashion. Many people visit my websites. I'm sure that has a lot to do with how my websites look.
