About the author

Archimandrite Sophrony (Sakharov), also Elder Sophrony, was best known as the disciple and biographer of St Silouan the Athonite and compiler of St Silouan's works, and as the founder of the Patriarchal Stavropegic Monastery of St. John the Baptist in Tolleshunt Knights, Maldon, Essex, England.

This is one of the best compilations of writings on prayer that I have read. I have tasted little bits of what he talks about here, but not the fullness. It’s a book I foresee myself coming back to regularly.

This book is a path towards living eternity while still being here on earth within the boundaries of time. A book that will irrigate your severe thirst for finding God, and finding yourself.
Archimandrite Sophrony will take you on-board through a heavenly journey, after which prayer will no more compromise blocks or sessions of your routine day, but rather will be your desired mode of existence, to be the true human that the world has been craving for ever since the ontological fall of Adam; to become, not just Christ-like, but Christ.

What is it to philosophize? Ask St. Sophrony, even he realized that it is not enough to ask "to be or not to be" when such questions cannot even pretend to try to penetrate reality. Instead what he did after studying abstract art, western philosophy of systems and eastern traditions of impersonal absolutes was to embrace true love of wisdom (that philosophy for such a long time again pretends to mimic), become a monk. What is it to live? To suffer. What is it to live? To reap the fruits of this suffering. Yet again, what is it to live? To feel joy. Apologies if this sounds like sophistry to you, but I am not a lover of wisdom, just a foolish one who may never become a monk nor a great person such as the author of this book is.

What a noble one was our dear St. Sophrony.

Reading this either before or after reading St. Silouan the Athonite (by the same author) is exceedingly profitable to the person who is willing to give everything for Christ's sake.

Eine der größten Mühen im Leben eines jeden (orthodoxen) Christen ist das Gebet. Jede Arbeit und jede Tätigkeit kann leicht erlangt werden, doch das Gebet ist eine hohe Kunst und eine besondere Fähigkeit, die denen gegeben wird, die sich mit Demut und Glaube an Christus wenden. Das Buch ist wie eine warme Decke für die Seele, die mich mit der endlosen Liebe Christi berührt hat. „In der Eitelkeit dieser Welt ist meine Seele ausgedorrt und ich bedarf dringend des lebendigen Wassers, das von meinem Schöpfer ausgeht und «in das ewige Leben quillt». Ich schreibe und die ganze Zeit halte ich mich zurück, um mich nicht einer solchen Sprache zu bedienen, die in Wirklichkeit die einzig mögliche ist, um den quälenden Schmerz meines ganzen Seins auf der Suche nach meinem Gott und Erlöser auszudrücken. Mein ganzer Körper betete ebenfalls, in eins zusammengeballt. Die Stirn war auf die Erde gepresst, die Tränen flossen in Strömen, brennende Tränen, die die harten Steine der Leidenschaften in mir auflöste".

So nahbar, zerbrechlich, offen der heilige Vater sich auch zeigen mag, schimmert durch Archimandrit Sophrony seine Heiligkeit und das Wirken Christi. Genau in dieser Demut liegt die Kraft Gottes. Ihm sei alle Ehre in Ewigkeit, Amen!

I would not recommend this one. Possibly I am too low IQ/ low brow for this.

Either the writing or the translation is not good. I suspect it is the translation because of the very obscure choices of words and odd sentence structure. This made it very difficult to parse the meaning of the text. It was basically painful. You could say reading it was an ascetic struggle.

The actual ideas in the book seem good and sensible - where I understood them. However, much of the book I could not grasp, because I simply could not relate it to my own experiences. I think this may be a book for those who are monastics, or who have been christians a much longer time than me.

Probably due to it being a collection of articles, the chapters didn't seem to move in a linear path. Part I didn't excite much in me, but Part II on the Jesus Prayer was more of what I was looking for when I picked up this book.

A very profound book. There is so much that I didn’t grasp (and will require re-reading slowly), but the nuggets that I was able to understand were powerful. If you want to go deeply into prayer, this is a good place to start but it will take time.

Orthodox writings tend to be either pastoral or densely theological. St Sophrony's On Prayer is both. An extended treatise on the mystery of prayer, On Prayer is a dense read but one that, like prayer itself, rewards deep contemplation.

Ekumeeninen patriarkaatti luki Essexin P. Johannes Kastajan luostarin perustajan, arkkimandriitta Sofroni Saharovin (1896–1993) pyhien joukkoon loppuvuodesta 2019. Jos sitä ennen vanhus Sofroni oli nauttinut laajaa arvostusta ortodoksipiireissä. Saharov pakeni nuorena miehenä Neuvosto-Venäjältä Pariisiin, missä hän eli 1920-luvulla taiteilijaelämää. Entisen elämän keskeytti voimakas uskonnollinen herätys, joka sai Sofronin lähtemään 1930-luvulla Athos-vuorelle, jossa hän kilvoitteli parikymmentä vuotta Pyhittäjä Siluan Athosvuorelaisen opastamana. Ankara kilvoitus kävi Sofronin terveyden päälle ja 1950-luvulla hän palasi ihmisten ilmoille, ensin Pariisiin ja sitten Englantiin.

Rukouksesta on nimensä mukaisesti kirja, jossa pyhittäjä Sofroni esittää ajatuksiaan rukoilemisesta. Tältä osin keskeisessä roolissa on hesykastinen Jeesuksen rukouksen perinne ja pyhittäjä Siluanin mystinen opetus: "Pidä mielesi helvetissä äläkä vaivu epätoivoon." Ortodoksista rukousperinnettä tuntemattomalta lukijalta suuri osa kirjasta menee epäilemättä täysin yli hilseen, ja vaikka olen tuohon perinteeseen vuosien saatossa hieman tutustunut, jouduin lukemaan useita pätkiä useampaan kertaan, enkä siltikään ole varma, ymmärsinkö kaiken oikein.

Verrattuna esim. P. Johannes Valamolaiseen tai P. Paisios Athoslaiseen voi P. Sofroni Saharovia sanoa melko "akateemiseksi" kirjoittajaksi, jonka teksteistä paistaa läpi tietty lukeneisuus (Saharov opiskeli St Sergen teologisessa instituutissa Pariisissa). On makuasia, pitääkö parempana Saharovin tyyliä vai "talonpoikakilvoittelijoiden" yksinkertaisuutta. Joka tapauksessa Saharovin teksteistä puuttuu se häiritsevä itsekorostuksen sävy, joka jättää omituisen sivumaun esim. P. Joosef Hesykastin nimissä julkaistuihin kirjeisiin.
