Jerry G. Walls is an editor, author, and amateur conchologist who has described numerous species of marine and freshwater gastropods. Specializing in cones, cowries, conchs, and olives, he is best known for his 1979 publication Cone Shells: A Synopsis of the Living Conidae.
At the age of three my son started asking for reptiles. I said: No way. At four I said: No. At five I gave him a cat. At six I gave him a fish. At seven I gave him sea monkeys. At eight he stopped asking. I breathed. At eight and three-quarters he started again. I said: NO WAY! At eight years and three hundred sixty-four days his father said he was going to buy a snake the next day. Now I love animals. In my life I've had fish, salamanders, frogs, turtles, mice, hamsters, a guinea pig, ducks, bunnies, cats, dogs, and cows. I wanted more. I have played midwife to pigs, cats, and a yellow lab. I'm a country girl. But I do not like snakes.
I got myself on the internet post-haste and stayed up all night researching reptiles. If I had to have one it would be one of my choosing. Because you know how these things go. In two weeks I'd be the one who owned a (gulp) snake. I decided I wanted a leopard gecko.
I have complimented myself on my very wise choice through nearly two years and two leopard geckos. They're incredible. My future herpetologist is about to turn eleven though and he's talking that snake talk again. I do not like snakes. So I found this book on his shelf and thought to find another gecko to tempt him with. There are few books on geckos and even fewer good ones. This is about the best you'll find on them as pets. Housing, breeding, and care are all covered in more accurate detail than I've found on the internet. There seems to be a lot of trial and error going on in the lizard owning world, which is unfortunate. Don't trust the sixteen year-old salesman at Petco either. He'll tell you anything to get you out of his way so he can flirt with the girl in the fish department.
