Sylvia Plath was an American poet, novelist, and short story writer, widely regarded as one of the most influential and emotionally powerful authors of the 20th century. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she demonstrated literary talent from an early age, publishing her first poem at the age of eight. Her early life was shaped by the death of her father, Otto Plath, when she was eight years old, a trauma that would profoundly influence her later work.
Plath attended Smith College, where she excelled academically but also struggled privately with depression. In 1953, she survived a suicide attempt, an experience she later fictionalized in her semi-autobiographical novel The Bell Jar. After recovering, she earned a Fulbright Scholarship to study at Newnham College, Cambridge, in England. While there, she met and married English poet Ted Hughes in 1956. Their relationship was passionate but tumultuous, with tensions exacerbated by personal differences and Hughes's infidelities.
Throughout her life, Plath sought to balance her ambitions as a writer with the demands of marriage and motherhood. She had two children with Hughes, Frieda and Nicholas, and continued to write prolifically. In 1960, her first poetry collection, The Colossus and Other Poems, was published in the United Kingdom. Although it received modest critical attention at the time, it laid the foundation for her distinctive voice—intensely personal, often exploring themes of death, rebirth, and female identity.
Plath's marriage unraveled in 1962, leading to a period of intense emotional turmoil but also extraordinary creative output. Living with her two children in London, she wrote many of the poems that would posthumously form Ariel, the collection that would cement her literary legacy. These works, filled with striking imagery and raw emotional force, displayed her ability to turn personal suffering into powerful art. Poems like "Daddy" and "Lady Lazarus" remain among her most famous, celebrated for their fierce honesty and technical brilliance.
In early 1963, following a deepening depression, Plath died by suicide at the age of 30. Her death shocked the literary world and sparked a lasting fascination with her life and work. The posthumous publication of Ariel in 1965, edited by Hughes, introduced Plath's later poetry to a wide audience and established her as a major figure in modern literature. Her novel The Bell Jar was also published under her own name shortly after her death, having initially appeared under the pseudonym "Victoria Lucas."
Plath’s work is often classified within the genre of confessional poetry, a style that emphasizes personal and psychological experiences. Her fearless exploration of themes like mental illness, female oppression, and death has resonated with generations of readers and scholars. Over time, Plath has become a feminist icon, though her legacy is complex and occasionally controversial, especially in light of debates over Hughes's role in managing her literary estate and personal history.
Today, Sylvia Plath is remembered not only for her tragic personal story but also for her immense contributions to American and English literature. Her work continues to inspire writers, artists, and readers worldwide. Or a Jet-propelled Bed

While not quite The Sleep Book (the bestest book ever on God's green Earth) The Bed Book made me feel good. Maybe not snug in a rug with a bed bug. The snack bed is kind of creepy. Who would want to sleep on a pillow made of bread? The illustration of the happy mice running away sight unseen with a cupcake was cute. I'll pass on the vending machine bed. I want the bird-watcher's adored bed of a hammock between two trees and underneath a canopy of cherry thieving feathered friends. This is pretty Suessian in spirit and that is by no means a bad thing. Beds for me and for you and for two (probably. Morrissey once said that a double bed was the riches of the poor).

The It-Doesn't-Matter Suit wasn't too shabby either. I can't say I'd rock a mustard yellow suit (someone I don't like told me I looked pretty in yellow and that ruined the color for me ever after). Right on for Max Winkelburg strolling down the street in his mustard yellow suit. Sure dogs think he's a rubber chicken. They chase him with watering mouths. It doesn't matter because he's happy. I admire him for strolling down the avenue with his entourage of hungry cats and dogs. It doesn't matter if you look like a grilled cheese sandwich. Right on.

I dug the illustrations by David Roberts. The dogs with their hungry teeth (spot on portraying a number of wiener dogs).

Mrs. Cherry's Kitchen wasn't my favorite. I used to have that fantasy inspired by Fantasia when Mickey magics the mops and brooms to do his bidding for him. I just know that it would turn out bad for me if I could talk to appliances. Maybe The Bed Book did its bit by then and I was already feeling zzzzzzzzzzzz by this one. There were a lot of appliances in The Bed Book too. Ovens for feet toasting and tanks to drive (watch out hungry doggies). I don't even own a toaster. Who needs any of that when you have a bed to zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Прекрасно издание. Историите са симпатични, илюстрациите на Капка Кънева са вдъхновени и забележителни, а Стефан Русинов е направил разкошен превод. В пълно упоение съм от третата история – „Книгата на леглата“. Тя е в стихотворна форма и на български така се лее, толкова е смешна и изящна, толкова умна и интересна, че ме накара да я прочета два пъти едно след друго, при това на глас. Браво!

This was a cute short collection of children's stories that show how talented Sylvia Plath was, and that she could write a wide range of prose. All three stories are written differently - 'The Bed Book' is a charming poem, 'The It-Doesn't-Matter Suit' is a classic repetitive story à la Goldilocks and the Three Bears while 'Mrs Cherry's Kitchen' is more fantastical, featuring pixies and anthropomorphic kitchen appliances.

If you are a fan of Plath's work, this is definitely worth reading.

Bu kitapta üç tane kısa öykü var: Yatak Kitabı, Hiç Önemi Yok Elbisesi, Kiraz Hanım’ın Mutfağı. İlk öyküyü, yani Yatak Kitabı’nı okurken çok bir şey anlamadım (Çeviri yüzünden olduğunu tahmin ediyorum). İkinci öyküyü, yani Hiç Önemi Yok Elbisesi’ni çok sevdim ve hemen bitirdim. Yedi çocuklu bir aileye postayla gelen hardal sarısı bir elbiseyi kimin alacağını anlatıyordu. Kitaba adını veren son öykü, yani Kiraz Hanım’ın Mutfağı’nı diğerlerinden daha çok sevdim. Kiraz Hanım’ın mutfağındaki aletlerin görevlerinden memnun olmayıp görevlerini değiştirmek istemelerini anlatıyordu. Gerçekten çok güzel bir kitaptı. Kısa ve eğlenceli öyküleri sevenlere tavsiye ediyorum.

Sylvia plath in çocuk kitabı yazdigini bilmiyordum tesadüf eseri karşıma çıkınca hemen bir şans veriyim dedim ve çok güzeldi. Büyüklerin de seveceği tarzda kısa ve akılda kalıcı bir kitap. Hiç önemi yok elbisesi benim en sevdiğim hikaye oldu

Убедена съм, че и аз мога да правя чудесни бели къдрички, стига да ми се даде възможност. Вижте само колко красива и пенлива е битата ми сметана! Много искам да си сменя работата за един ден.
- Ссс. И аз! - въздъхна Ютия. - Искам да поема работата на братовчеда Гофретник. Господин Черешов се облизва при вида на неговите хрупкави гофрети, но аз мога да правя още по-хубави вдлъбнатини с лъскавото си връхче. Нека опитам!
Ако щете вярвайте, всеки електрически уред в кухнята на госпожа Черешова имаше подобно желание. Фурна искаше да изглади ризите на господин Черешов, за да станат твърди като корички на кекс. Кафеварка жадуваше да вкуси сладолед.
- Сигурна съм, че мога да съм студена колкото Хладилник - наду се тя, - само да си го наумя.
- Аз пък - изфука се Тостер - мога да изкарам ледени кубчета с много по-хубава форма още преди да се усетите!

Kendi çocukları için yazdığı 3 hikayeden oluşan kitapta Kiraz Hanım'ın Mutfağı'nı çok çok sevdim. Kitaplarında kendini yoketmek üzerine bunca yazan Slyvia Plath, o yazılarının aksine çok naif hikayeler anlatmış çocuklar için.

Toto je čarovná knižka o posteliach rôznych tvarov a možností ✌️ a priam kúzelné rozprávky navyše s milými ilustráciami.

��реди някога да съм прочела Стъкления похлупак, реших да започна по-жизнерадостно с детски истории от Силвия Плат. За мен първата с костюма беше най-слаба, 2рата беше с досаден хепи енд, а последното стихче за мен беше най-добро.
Огромен плюс за книгата са илюстрациите, уникални!

Kitap küçük arkadaşlarımız için düşünüldüğünde 4 yıldız alabilecek bir kitap. Ama epey küçük arkadaşlarımızı düşündüğümüzde... Benim okuduğum Sorun Yaratmayan Kıyafet'in çevirisi Bilge Nur Öğütücü ve Zerrin Ertan Keskin tarafından yapılmıştır. Zannediyorum ki her iki çevirmenin de ilk işi imiş. Daha sonra bu kitap İlnur Özdemir çevirisi ile kırmızı Kedi yayın evinden çıkarılmış. Elimdeki kitap 1. Baskı Nisan 2009 basımı Sorun Yaratmayan Kıyafet'tir. Kitap içinde üç öykü barındırıyor. Birincisi Yatak Kitabı, ikincisi Sorun Yaratmayan Kıyafet ve üçüncüsü Bayan Şeri'nin Mutfağı.

1. Yatak Kitabı: Bir öyküden ziyade okuması zevkli bir şiir diyebiliriz. Çeviriye çok özen gösterdiklerini düşünüyorum kafiye uyumundan dolayı. Özellikle sesli okuduğunuz zaman bir çocuğu etkilemenin ve onu yatağa göndermek için kandırmanın kolay olduğu bir şiir. Bu yüzden çocuklar için yazılmış olan bu hikayeleri Sylvia'nın kendi doğumundan sonraki dönemde onları uyutmanın keyifli hale gelmesi için yazdığını düşündüm. Kitapta bahsedilen atıştırma yatağı, ekmekten bir yastık, cep yatak ve diğer yataklar için yaptığı benzetmeler Sylvia'nın hayal gücünün masalsı tarafını da göstermiş oluyor bize. Kitabın tamamı için bu yorumu yapabiliriz.

2. Sorun Yaratmayan Kıyafet: Çok kısa bir çocuk öyküsü. Bir ana fikri ya da mesajı yok. Üstelik çok tahmin edilebilir. Yine de küçük bir arkadaşınıza bu hikayeyi okuyarak hardal rengi kıyafetini sevdirebilirsiniz.

3. Bayan Şeri'nin Mutfağı: Bu hikayenin bir ana fikri vardı ve ikinci hikayeye kıyasla biraz daha yaratıcıydı diye düşünüyorum.

Kitap içerisindeki çizimler tamamlayıcı olmuş. Hem okuyup hem de çizimlerin yardımıyla hayalimizde canlandırmak bizim için de keyif verici ve kolaylayıcı oldu diyebiliriz. Çizimlerin sahibi ise David Roberts olarak geçmektedir.

When I found out, that Sylvia Plath was also writing a fairy-tales, I was astonished. I love the feeling when the author I think I understand surprise me (here I feel the need to say that I only read Ariel, so any feeling of understanding was dubious from the beginning.). I started this book with an expectation to find an entirely different facet of Plath. And in a way it did… but it also didn’t. Especially from "The It-Doesn't-Matter Suit" I distinctly felt Plath’s spirit. The form wasn’t the best (I am not a big fan of repetitiveness), the whole time it telegraphed a sort of “otherness” and an effort to reconcile with it. It seemed to me that Plath wrote this one for herself. Like if she was trying to persuade herself that it is alright to be different. (That of course also makes it a perfect children story…) And even though the whole tale is very positive, I was flooded by an unexpected sadness while reading it. That is of course only my personal view.

"The Bed Book" on the other hand was a pure fun and nothing serious. It isn’t a poetic masterpiece, but… who cares… "Mrs Cherry's Kitchen" is the most classical tale of all of them and easiest to like – I certainly liked it very much.

The Czech edition is beautifully made – the cover looks a little bit like a duvet and the illustrations are beautiful. That tipped my rating toward the five stars.

тази книга отпътува рано сутринта с една щедра торта, опаковани заедно и пренесени в любезно такси до другия край на софия - подарък за рожден ден на пет годишна фурия.
после пожелах книгата и за себе си и сега два пъти съм я имала.
размечтах се за легла като тези:

до марс ще се возиш
с леглото ракета
снабдено с комарник*
за лов на комети.

а в случай че нощем
ти курка коремът**,
легло закусвалня
решава проблема

с хлебна възглавка,
а точно отзад -
огромен, безплатен
закускомат.

*присетих се за леглото с пробити балдахини в тайландско островно село, заплетена из между които имах остра схватка с комари

** това е ултимативната мечта за хора, които не заспиват преди 4:00

Не бях стъпвал в библиотеката от 2 месеца... а какъв по-добър ден за библиотека от рождения ти ден!Взех си 4 книги - Георги Господинов,2 на Силвия Плат и една стихосбирка.
Реших да започна с приказките на Плат , защото знам ,че те са най-весели от творчеството ѝ.
Стихотворението ѝ за леглата ми хареса най-много!Не бях стъпвал в детския отдел от години и всичко изглеждаше толкова малко... Харесаха ми философските есенции ,скрити зад привидно простите сюжети на първите две приказки.
Някои повторения можеше да бъдат пропуснати ,но като изключим това ми хареса книжката - като се има предвид ,че рядко чета детски книжки.

Kütüphanede bakınırken Sylvia Plath ismini bir çocuk kitabında görünce dikkatimi çekti ve hemen alıp okudum. Kitap üç farklı hikayeden oluşuyor:

1. Yatak Kitabı: ?

2. Sorun Yaratmayan Kıyafet: İnsanların ön yargılarına aldırış etmeden, ne kadar farklı ve normun dışında olursa olsun, kendin gibi olmaktan çekinme!

3. Bayan Şeri’nin Mutfağı: Herkes kendi işini yapsa ve kimse kimsenin işine karışmasa ve özenmese her şey daha düzgün ilerler..

Bir yıldızı ilk hikayeyi anlamsız bulduğumdan ve pek sevemediğimden, ikinci yıldızı da kitabın içindeki çizimleri hitap ettiği kitle için biraz fazla ürkütücü bulduğumdan kırıyorum.

Kitap üç bölümden oluşuyor. İki hikaye ve bir şiir. Kitaba adını veren hikaye olmasa idi çok eğlenceli ve tadında bir çocuk kitabı olabilirdi benim için.
Kiraz Hanım'ın mutfağında herkesin sadece kendi işini yapabilmesi, başka bir işe yeltenildiğinde cız pat çat olması ayrıca tüm işlerin kadının sorumluluğunda olması ve ev aletlerinin yalnızca Kiraz Hanım'a yardım etmeleri benim hoşuma gitmedi.

This book includes one poem and two stories. They really display Plath's creative mind. One theme is that what we may want or expect in life is not always suitable or beneficial. The book is a keeper.
