BOOK REVIEW - Priesthood, multiple authors (1982)

Priesthood is a compilation featuring teachings by General Authorities, covering essentials such as: what priesthood is, its keys and powers, and even a detailed chapter on the revelation extending the priesthood to all worthy males. Drawing from multiple voices across church leadership, this book offers a foundational reference for understanding traditional LDS priesthood doctrine.

The essays lay out priesthood principles—what it entails, how it’s organized, and its spiritual significance—making it a valuable read for anyone seeking grounded doctrinal knowledge. Readers seeking faith-affirming insight into how priesthood power works practically and spiritually will appreciate the reverent, uplifting content drawn from authoritative sources. Although rooted in teachings from the 1980s, many of the core truths expressed continue to resonate with faithful church members today

Some passages use language or ideas that may strike modern readers as dated or condescending. “The greatest mission of woman is to give life, earth-life, through honorable marriage… All the honor and glory that can come to men and women … is but a dim thing whose luster shall fade in comparison to the high honor, the eternal glory, the ever-enduring happiness that shall come to the woman who fulfills the first great duty and mission that devolves upon her to become the mother of the sons and daughters of God.” This kind of language implicitly places motherhood above other forms of spiritual or personal advancement, and frames women's value primarily in terms of their roles in relation to men or family.

Priesthood remains a useful resource for understanding traditional LDS teachings on priesthood authority and spiritual service. Its devotional tone and grounding in authoritative voices are strengths for those seeking clarity in doctrine. However, its treatment of women and priesthood reflects the cultural and doctrinal sensitivities of its time. Contemporary readers may find its approach limited by lack inclusivity.

If you're exploring this topic today, it could be helpful to supplement Priesthood with more recent works—such as updated editions of Women and the Priesthood, official church essays that clarify women’s spiritual authority, and scholarly writings that offer broader context on evolving understandings of priesthood power.

I've been letting my dad choose books for me to read from his collection of church books and when the last book I read only gave a one paragraph explanation of the revelation about all worthy males receiving the priesthood I was really disappointed...so then he gave me this book, which not only has a whole chapter about the priesthood revelation, but also talks about everything I've never known about the priesthood. I'm a female...priesthood lessons almost never happen in young women's/relief society. I mean, I knew all that I really needed to, but still this book made everything clearer. I would recommend that both men and women read this book if they want to gain a deeper understanding of the priesthood power on earth today.

Side note: One chapter talks about women and the priesthood. This chapter at times comes across as being sexist (especially when considering today's worldly views of gender roles), but if you read to the end of the chapter he makes it very clear that men and women are equal partners with different family roles. Women don't need the priesthood to be equal.

A great book, a compilation of words from some Apostles, a couple members of the First Presidency, the 70 and Presiding Bishopric on the duties, blessings, importance, grandeur and etc. of the priesthood of God restored in these Last Days. Though dated back in 1981, it still holds import for today.
