Madeline Harper was one pseudonym used by the United States writing team formed by Madeline Porter and Shannon Harper. They have been writing since 1977, when their first book, a Gothic romance, was published as Elizabeth Habersham. They also signed their novels as Anna James.
As another reviewer said, there is a really immature feeling to this writing that was just so off putting I honestly didn't think I could subject myself to the rest of the book.
I also thought the heroines actions, in the scant few pages that I read, were incomprehensible. So here it is: she crashes her car into a ditch, the car is wedged on it's side and she's thrown head first into the wind-shield where she sustains an injury bad enough to knock her senseless and give her a terrible headache. Her purse is trapped under the driver's seat and she has to drag herself out the passenger window to escape the wreckage. When she gets back to her inn she sees what she believes is a historical reenactment from the 18th century. Her first thought is not to get to her room, not to seek medical assistance, nor to get help with her wrecked car... oh no... she decides to put on an apron and join in as a serving wench, even putting on a fake English accent. Girl you just had a car crash, you flew head first into the wind-shield, you're going to be shaken up and really worried about your head injury... it's just utter ridiculousness that she brushes it all off so she can prance about the inn playing dress up like a stupid kid and having vapid thoughts about how amazing all the costumes are and ohhhh isn't that man in the corner sooooo dashing.
Judging from the other review I think this idiocy is par for the course. No thanks, I'm checking out.
Gave this a read as I love tome travel romance. I like the premise. Heroine travels back in time to meet the doomed highwayman. History says he was hanged at age 28. Can she she save him? This book is from 1996, 26 years ago as if this review. I expected it to be a bit of a bodice ripper based on the time it was written, and can forgjve much if the story is otherwise entertaining. However, there is a bit of an immature feeling to the writing.
When Northcliffe is pondering Olivia's accent he just cant figure it out. He thinks it isn't Irish or English or Scots and he certainly hasn't beard anything like it on the continent. Oh dear, what can it be? This book is set in 1796. This is 20 years after the American was of Independance. America doesn't even come up, as if it doesn't exist. This may seem picky of me, but it's the kind of thing that bugs me. The characters thoughts and actions have to make sense to me.
Too many times things were anniyjng or made no sense so sadly i gave up on this one. That's not to say someone else may not enjoy it.
