Robbie Zaborac A5 English In the book Ghost Soldiers by Hampton Sides writes to inform and teach the reader. I think the author wrote this book to tell us about the rescue at the prison camp Cabanatuan, during WWII. This book is historical nonfiction written for anyone interested in WWII and the aspect of American prisoners of war in the Philippines Islands. This national bestseller has a lot of information about life in the prison camp and the famous rescue of the prisoners. There are many themes in Ghost Soldier. The two main themes I found are about life in the prison camp and the planning and rescue to save those soldiers. Life at Cabanatuan was full of disease, hunger, and fear. Hampton says, “These men suffered enough for a hundred lifetimes, and no one in this country should be allowed to forget it.” The Japanese were known to beat and kill prisoners at any given moment. The other theme of the book was about the Army Rangers, a group that was officially formed during the war. The hand selected group was commanded by Colonel Mucci. It took months of planning before the successful raid took place. The book is very descriptive. The writer, Hampton Sides relates the story through historical facts given by those that were there and a part in the raid. The book goes in chronological order from the capture of the American soldiers to the rescue at Cabanatuan. The third person telling was effective because the reader was able to follow multiple viewpoints. I liked the book and can see why it is a bestseller. Given a choice I read nonfiction, usually about subjects similar to this. The book was easy to follow. For example each chapter was about a different aspect. There were many chapters about life at the prison camp and how the mission to save them unfolded. This book was very unique to the story it told. Most people do not know or think about the war in the Pacific. The war in Germany and the Holocaust overshadows the American prison camps. But in the same way it is like other historical war books with the details and first-hand account stories.
