Chantal Boudreau is a seasoned author, and she brings well-honed writing skills to this outstanding, luminous story. This is one tale where I didn't find any nits to pick; her literary vision and message is spot-on, and she delivers it winsomely, with a well-crafted plot and a protagonist so real I wanted to reach into the page and give her an encouraging squeeze on the shoulder. And while you'll probably think (as I did), for much of this read, that it's fairly predictable and that you know where it's going, trust me --you don't. Bondreau has a twist up her sleeve, and a good one. (This story actually reminded me of, and has thematic similarities, to one by genre master writer Russell Kirk; but I won't name the latter, since if you've read it, that would probably constitute a spoiler.) Another comparison that suggested itself here was to Poe and Lovecraft; not because the author writes in "purple prose" --she doesn't-- but because like these two literary giants, she doesn't (at least here), make much use of dialogue. She chooses to spin her tale primarily through straight narration, and does it very ably. But her vision is far more optimistic than Poe's or HPL's.

Just as I couldn't reach into the page and squeeze Sonya's shoulder, I can't reach through the computer screen to give Boudreau a high five. I'll have to be content to say, "Great job, lady; keep up the good work!"

I gave my hubby a break for a day; hi, it is me again Mrs. Gelati. The reason for the break, well I was the one that read this short story and thoroughly enjoyed it; I was touched by it and have shared it with my daughters. The other reason I told him to stay away from the computer today is that I gave him a long list of things I wanted done for the Holiday this weekend, and gave him a head start to get it done. Besides that I am a bit upset with him and Zandri for what they wrote about me in their digital short story that was just released, The Gang That Couldn’t Kindle Straight. The two of them can explain themselves to you, my advice: read the story and tell me if you wouldn’t be a bit miffed or put off. I think I am well within my rights.
Back to Chantal Boudreau‘s story. I enjoyed the feel, and the substance of her writing. It wasn’t hollow and contained a deeper message and possessed some heart and dignity. The other thing that impressed me was the manner in which she went about it. She completed all of it in such a small package it made it that much more powerful; it hit hard. Her rich words struck me from the very beginning and left me with a renewed sense of purpose. I suggest you give this author and her work a try. I am glad that I did.
