Pretty ladies would smile at James when they saw his muscular features and thick dark hair. Often, they had initiated conversations with him. He had always felt comfortable talking to a lady that approached him. And, he liked the excitement of asking them out for the first date. Usually, the ladies said yes. But when an IED blew up his Hummer in Iraq, everything changed. Now he regrets his shame when they see the shiny metal claw that resides where his hand should be. If only he could erase that horrible day in Iraq. Then, one day while feeding the squirrels after his morning jog, James met Liz. Like previous attractive ladies, she approached him and introduced herself. She is young, smart, and sexy. She could have any guy. She doesn’t seem to care whether James has a prosthesis. Why is she different? Does she like James? Is there hope for romance in the life of this wounded soldier?
James is an Army vet who fought in Iran and lost a limb because of an IED. Lis was a nurse during the Afghanistan war and while she was returning to the medical tend to take care of patients a mortar was fired upon the tent. She survived but lost a leg in the process but several of her colleagues were killed along with a patient. They meet in central park when Liz notices James feeding the squirrels with peanuts. They get to know each over the next season and fall in love. They found each other because of their loss and over the feeding of squirrels.
I thought this was a very sweet story of two of our honored service men & women. Who not only have give their time away from home & family & friends but sometimes their lives. Or like maybe sometimes a limb. Which can cause them to see themselves as invisible or as a non-member of society. This short shows another view. Almost to sugary of a story in some was but still nice.
Enjoyed reading it. Too short though. Would have enjoyed a more indepth story, but it was a very sweet story. You really feel for both of them and the rejection they must have faced before finding each other.
