Using Your Money Wisely: Biblical Principles Under Scrutiny

Rate this book
Do you know how far-reaching your finances are? Nearly 80 percent of all divorced couples between the ages of 20 and 30 list financial difficulties as the primary cause of their separation. Even some of the most dedicated Christians are facing the perils of bankruptcy and overextended credit. We are seeing just some of the effects of living in a materialistic society. Larry Burkett, renowned for his Christian Financial Concepts ministry, dedicated himself to helping people understand what the Scripture says about finances. Through a series of outstanding articles taken from CFC newsletters, Using Your Money Wisely clearly demonstrates God’s principles for prudent money management.

The second in Larry Burkett's main financial trilogy, this one is a detailed and long look at using money in a way consistent with Scripture. Burkett's writing is steeped in Scripture and full of practical advice on using money wisely.

The book's main drawback is that Burkett took far too wide a view of his subject for a single book. He starts with attitudes toward wealth and the book is strong through that section. But the second section shows some departure from a tightly defined train of thought; in the section he takes on money and the church, including welfare and church benevolence. He then moves into insurance and investing, borrowing and lending (these sections are good and to the point), then to business, again stepping into a very broad subject with no good roadmap for what to cover and what to leave on the editing room floor (e.g., business ethics, wether or not Christians should sue, and multi-level marketing).

The following section--family--shows the same over-broad character ("Disciplining Children" and "Choosing the right vocation") in a way that the very good Biblical instruction on family and finances can easily become lost.

It's worth the read for the good advice, but I found myself speeding through several large sections of this one.

I picked up this paperback at goodwill for 50 cents as Dave Ramsey mentions Larry frequently in his Financial Peace classes. Larry's principles are solid I believe and Dave has mirrored some of those same principles, however, Dave does deviate upon issues of "wealth building" and insurance matters.

This book is pretty repetitive and written like each section was a separate article at one time. I'm not a Christian so skimmed some of the more religious sagas, but financial and moral advice is very solid with the exception of some of the business sections.

The HR lady in me dropped my jaw at some of the business advice from Larry. Some of it is clearly illegal hiring activity.
