Like any other preschooler, Victoria is engaged by the world around her, excited to play with her friends, sometimes happy, and sometimes not. But unlike her peers she has Down's Syndrome. This thoughtful book follows Victoria on her typical day as she integrates into a mainstream nursery school. Young readers can compare and contrast their own experiences with Victoria’s as she reads a book, paints, bakes biscuits, and plays games. Though she may look a little different, the book shows that Victoria is really not so different after all.
I used to love this structure of book: looking at a daily schedule. I always thought of it as a really good way to learn about other people and see how my life was different from there's day to day. I would make a point to read the blurb about Victoria that is in the back of the book to discuss with my students about a student with a disability, and then look at how even though Victoria does have down syndrome, her day looks very similar to ours! I think this would help me encourage to general education students that it doesn't matter what our friends look like, because we all have a lot in common!
Photos show the day in the life of young Victoria as she goes to PreK, dance class, the farmers market, and home for dinner, stories, and bed.
Victoria has down syndrome but that isn't the focus of the book, or even mentioned. Just showing how the lives of the different children are really all alike.
