T.W. Hunt was widely known as an authority on prayer and was the author of such books as The Mind of Christ and Disciple’s Prayer Life. He also was a professor of music and missions at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary from 1963 to 1987.
While he made a profession of faith in Christ at age 10, it was not until 1959 that he committed his life to Christ after reading a copy of the Martin Luther German translation of the Bible. The Bible was a gift from a music student who knew Hunt spoke the language.
Four years later, Hunt followed God’s leading to teach at Southwestern Seminary. He soon developed a course offering students techniques for using music to communicate the message of the gospel by focusing on the indigenous music of the people. In 1987, the SBC Sunday School Board asked him to become the board’s first prayer consultant. He retired from LifeWay Christian Resources in 1994.
DISCIPLE'S PRAYER LIFE is a thirteen week bible study. It's intended audience is beginning to mid-level pray-ers that desire a deeper prayer life and perhaps be involved with or start a prayer ministry. For that audience, this study succeeds.
When picking out a Bible Study, a major factor in the decision process is the amount of time the study demands and will the spent time be a valuable investment of time. Although I did not feel challenged a lot during parts of the study, the times I did were most definitely worth the elementary level information. The sections dedicated to intercessory prayer and the history of prayer were very insightful.
There were many things to like about this study, first and foremost the study is totally predicated on Scripture. Second, almost every page brings a point of reference that relates to the reader's life in some way and the study makes the reader give a true evaluation of where he/she is as a pray-er in the beginning of the study and also at the end of the study. Thus mirroring the reader's growth as a prayer warrior. A very effective tool. Another major positive is all the prayer guides that accompany the study. These form a very nice reference tool for later and continual use.
Be forewarned though, there are some negative aspects of the study. First, as mentioned above, the study is designed for Christians not so mature in the art of prayer. Second, this study is a Lifeway Press Study found at Lifeway Christian Bookstores. I mention this because it is geared specifically to the Southern Baptist Crowd that influences Lifeway so much. The study references this more than a couple of occasions. However, the study is not recruiting or proselytizing in any way, form or fashion whatsoever. I truly believe an intended market for the study is Sunday School classes and most definitely small group meetings.
I enjoyed this study when I was challenged with new information; and even the more rudimentary materials served as a good reminder of things already learned but sometimes not remembered. I think this study is most definitely worth the time and money depending if you can go through all 13 weeks faithfully.
In in-depth, detailed practical study and guide to developing one's prayer life, regardless of one's starting point. Provides much support in the form of tables and lists to assist in giving structure, focus and continuity in prayer. The narrative contains many golden nuggets of wisdom by the author, a senior gentleman with the fruit of many years of experience to share. This is a book to retain and refer to repeatedly.
