About the author

Richard Beard’s six novels include Lazarus is Dead, Dry Bones and Damascus, which was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. In the UK he has been shortlisted for the BBC National Short Story Award and longlisted for the Sunday Times EFG Private Bank Short Story Award. His latest novel Acts of the Assassins was shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize in 2015. He is also the author of four books of narrative non-fiction, including his 2017 memoir The Day That Went Missing. Formerly Director of The National Academy of Writing in London, he is a Visiting Professor (2016/17) at the University of Tokyo, and has a Creative Writing Fellowship at the University of East Anglia. In 2017 he is a juror for Canada’s Scotiabank Giller Prize. Beard is also an occasional contributor to the Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, The Times, The Financial Times, Prospect and The Nightwatchman.

He studied at Cambridge, at the Open University, and with Malcolm Bradbury on the Creative Writing MA at the University of East Anglia. He has worked as a P.E. teacher, as Secretary to Mathilda, Duchess of Argyll, and as an employee of the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. In the Mendip Hills Richard Beard looked after Brookleaze, a house owned by the Royal Society of Literature, and lived for three years in Japan as Professor of British Studies at the University of Tokyo.

He is one of several opening batsmen for the Authors XI Cricket Club.

Je hebt ‘rugby’ en ‘rugger’. Het eerste is de sport die we zien op TV, in de Ereklasse en dromen we als kind van om te spelen. Het tweede is wat men in Engeland ‘Coarse Rugby’ noemen. Lees ook het boek ‘The Art of Course Rugby van Michael Green als je het te pakken kan krijgen. Het ‘sociale, amateur spelletje’ dat in de laagste klasses of vriendschappelijk wordt gespeeld, met de verplichte 3e helft. Sinds rugby professioneel werd in 1995 is de tweedeling alsmaar duidelijker geworden. Rugby is een ‘product’ geworden, een speeltje voor rijke eigenaars of overambitieuze voorzitters en sponsors. Richard Beard zag het spel dat hij speelde veranderen en ging terug naar de clubs waar hij op redelijk niveau speelde.

Eerst iets over Richard zelf. In 2018 won hij de prestigieuze PEN/Ackerley Prize met zijn autobiografie ‘The Day that went Missing’ maar hij begon in 1996 met het magistrale X20, A Novel of Not Smoking. Het boek is verdeeld in twintig delen, allen met evenveel woorden het aantal sigaretten in een pakje. De verteller probeert te stoppen met roken en elke keer als hij een wil roken schrijft hij een hoofdstuk.

Voor Muddied Oafs gaat Beard langs de clubs waar hij speelde in Schotland, Frankrijk, Italië, Zwitserland en Engeland. Hij blikt terug op de tijd dat hij speelde en probeert overal nog een wedstrijdje mee te pikken, maar spreekt ook met oud-internationals, gelauwerde schrijvers en de vrijwilligers die de clubs in stand houden. Zijn schrijfstijl is humoristisch maar niet flauw, gedoseerd literair maar altijd een genot om te lezen. Zijn liefde voor ‘rugger’ is oprecht en zal de ex-speler terug doen verlangen naar zijn of haar eigen ‘haydays’. Tijd om je aan te melden voor de volgende Landelijke Veteranendag op zaterdag 15 januari bij RC Betuwe in Bemmel en dit boek te lezen. Waarschuwing, dit werk uit 2003 zou wel eens lastig te krijgen kunnen zijn, maar er zijn altijd tweedehands online winkels.
