George Kateb is William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Politics, Emeritus, at Princeton University. A staunch individualist, he has written scholarly works on Ralph Waldo Emerson, John Stuart Mill, and Hannah Arendt and on the ethical dimensions of the individual in a constitutional democracy.
This is a fantastic, deep, thoughtful book. Written ~50 years ago, Kateb discusses political philosophy through and with the concept of utopia. The book does read somewhat dated, some of the attitudes Kateb expresses were the product of his time (though some people today may still be sympathetic), particularly about bureaucracy and the effectiveness of planning (or planned economies). The book retains relevance, though, in the overall approach Kateb takes towards utopia, which is one of cautious admiration. That level of humility and perspective enhances the argument of the book, and the book still has something to offer. The book covers BF Skinner, JS Mill, HG Wells, among others.
