About the author

Joseph Fielding McConkie received a Doctorate of Education from Brigham Young University in 1973, following which he became the director of the LDS Institute of Religion at the University of Washington in Seattle. Four years later he joined the faculty at BYU where he is now a Professor of Ancient Scripture. He is the author or co-author of 25 books, the most recent being a 1200 page work titled Revelations of the Restoration. His scholarly interests center in scripture and doctrine. Other experiences include being an LDS Chaplain in Vietnam, a mission president in Scotland, and a Stake President at BYU.

This felt a little bit like reading the apocrypha. Some truth and lots of opinions. The book I think breaks down into three parts, 1. Things that are doctrinal and useful, 2. Opinions that reflect the cultural times, and 3. The answer really should have been "I don't know". (Mind you parts 2 and three probably are the same.) Read with a spirit of revelation, otherwise, you might as well avoid.

Mainly written for LDS readers. Mostly good advice, but I didn't agree with all of it. But then the book is over 20 years old. Things change.

Wow! What wonderful, straight forward, doctrine based answers! Some of it I knew and some was inspirational that I had never thought about. I really liked his approach of using scriptures from both the Bible and the Book of Mormon and then a doctrinal quote to answer the questions.

This was a good review of some basic questions most of us have on a variety of topics. His answers were helpful but he really hit the ball out of the park with his answers on doctrine, which was the end chapter. I'm glad I stayed until the end.

These questions aren't so tough. I would actually say there is a majority of basic questions. I wanted some good details on provocative stuff, but this isn't the book to find it. 2 stars = it's ok.

Excellent book. Brother McConkie takes on some hard questions and answers them with faith and common sense. Highly recommended.
