Former prime minister of Israel Ariel Sharon once said, “We have the US under our control” and, “There is no Zionism, colonization or Jewish state without the eviction of the Arabs and the expropriation of their lands.” There’s present-day Israel reduced to two quotes. Not to be outdone, another former prime minister of Israel, Ehud Olmert, thoughtfully added, “I want no one to sleep at night in Gaza”. IDF General Moshe Dayan (who looked like Donald Pleasance at an eye exam) explained Zionism further, “Israel must be like a mad dog, too dangerous to bother.” As the author states, “the very founding of Israel was based on terror and violent destruction of hotels, cafes, hospitals, schools and homes.” According to UN voting behavior, Israel is international pariah #1. “Haaretz showed that 68% of Israeli Jews reject living near an Arab.” The US supported Israel’s 1967, 1973 and 1982 wars – Israel wanted a war to remove Saddam and bingo – we removed Saddam. In fact, US neocons Douglas Feith and Richard Perle in 1996 wrote a Likud Party policy paper that “called for the destruction of Saddam Hussein” and that the governments of Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Iran all needed regime change so paranoid Israel could finally say it felt “safe”. Funny how Muslims, Christians, Zoroastrians, and Hindus don’t continually jabber on publicly about not feeling safe, only faux Jews (Zionists) do. Weird how Zionists only see themselves as intimidating Sabras and warriors yet then pull the defenseless victim card at the drop of a hat. The European Commission did a poll in 2003 where “a clear majority of Europeans perceived Israel as the greatest threat to world peace.” “Intellectuals must challenge the Lobby’s tyranny over our foreign aid budget.”
During the Iraq War, I’d hear all the time about that war was only about oil (“what’s OUR oil doing under their sand?”) but this book sets me straight: US oil companies never pressured Congress for war in Iraq or confrontation in Iran. Instead, it was all about the state interests of Israel. This means the power of the Israel Lobby is greater than the power of oil companies. In fact, the Israel Lobby has kept oil companies from investing in Iran; in short, the Israel Lobby’s interests run counter to the interests of the major oil companies.
Post 9/11 justice was hijacked by rightwing Zionist zealots – Israeli supremacy was deemed more important than US military losses. Zero link between 9/11 or al Qaeda was found to Iraq. Ask yourself who was the major beneficiary of the Iraq War (which took out what Israel called its biggest adversary)? There is only ONE case on record of an imperial country covering up a direct attack by an ally: the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty; not even a direct attack by Israel will stop the US from making bedroom eyes at Israel. Even citizens in Israel wanted for committing murder in the US are not returned for trial (p.33).
Fun Facts: “Webster’s recent dictionary equates anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism.” Theoretically Leftist Mother Jones magazine ran an article critical of Rachel Corrie, heading it: “Martyr, idiot, dedicated, deluded.” No wonder I never read Mother Jones. I thought Seymour Hersh was cool but in this book I learned “Seymour Hersh publicly defended torture of suspects and their family members as a method of interrogation in the wake of September 11th.” All that post-911 torture got zero usable info other than proving torturers are human scum and making Seymour smile. Hersh knew Zionists in the Pentagon were pushing for war with Iraq before 9/11. Those Zionists saw Iraq as challenging Israel’s domination of the Middle East. Chalabi was chosen as the only available candidate subservient to Israel. At Israel’s bidding, Iraqi social services were destroyed as well as Iraqi courts, military, and civil services. Hey US, can you sadistically destroy my competition? Thanks, buddy!
Israel has also long had a hard on for war with Iran – Hey, why compete fairly, when you can get the lapdog US to destroy your competition? The US hubris kept it from understanding that making so many Iraqis unemployed would swell the resistance to occupation and make Iraq ungovernable – which soon happened. Israel didn’t care as enemy Iraq was mortally weakened – but the US took a major hit in reputation, even back at home, by 2004. According to the FBI, Israeli intelligence had advance notice of 9/11 but didn’t relay such info to US authorities. The US has a delightful group of assassins, “killing, kidnapping and torturing ’suspects’ under the name of Special Agency (or Access) Program (SAP).” You’d think they’d get these sleazeballs from mental hospitals and prisons, but instead they come from Army’s Special Forces, Navy SEALS, and Delta Force. I can just see the TV AD: “Be Tortured by the Finest! S.A.P. - Violating the Sovereignty of every Country in the World Since 1972”.
Pop Quiz: “How is a Palestinian farmer going to ‘keep up’ with a Jewish settler who seizes his land and water, and is supported by local thugs and Israeli soldiers acting under government authority blocking his access to the market?” Israel creating more blowback on itself through seeding the culture of resistance.
“To ignore the pro-Israel Lobby is to allow it a free hand in pushing for the invasion of Iran and Syria.” We were told the Iraq War was caused by Saddam thinking of switching to Euros away from the “dollar-dominated oil trade” but the author writes that had “no basis” because moving to the Euro “would have minimal or no impact on the currency market.” And would have involved less than 1% of currency transactions.” About Israel the author writes, “Righteous victimology, linked to ethno-religious loyalties and directed by fanatical civilian militarists with advanced weaponry, is the single greatest threat to world peace and humanity.” Just look at the Arab oil boycott which was the result of defending Israel and brought on Arab animosity and global monetary instability.
Noam Chomsky Plus: The author rightly mentions how Noam Chomsky, Stephen Zunes, Greg Palast, and Michael Klare all have a long track record of underestimating the power of the Israel Lobby. Noam won’t factor in the Lobby’s role in starting US wars and weaponizing anti-Semitism to silence Israel critics. Petras calls it Noam’s “blind spot”. Noam never explained why most US leaders in Congress go to the AIPAC annual meeting – perhaps it’s for the questionable cuisine. Pop Quiz: name any other US lobby that demands more abject servility than the Israel Lobby. Nor did Noam ever discuss the many US politicians voted out of office who either questioned practices or policies of the Israel Lobby. Nor did Noam ever discuss the ultra-Zionist documents of US planners (Douglas Feith and Richard Perle) from the 1990’s that salivated over attacking Iraq, Iran and Syria. Instead, we learn from Colonel Karen Kwiatkowski about “the easy and constant flow of Mossad and Israeli military officers in and out of Feith’s office, while critical US experts were virtually barred.” Those promoting the Iraq war first were neither from the military-industrial complex or Big Oil “but all were deeply and actively tied to the State of Israel and backed by the Lobby.” And don’t forget NYT’s liar/propagandist-in-chief Judith Miller “had close links with the Lobby.” Nor did Noam discuss the problems the Israel Lobby caused among the neglected Arab community, or diplomatic disadvantages of the US vetoing every damn Security Council resolution condemning Israel.
The problem terror experts had with the revelations of torture in Iraq was their nasty industry being exposed. “The next President will also use their services.” Flash Quiz: “Why is one culture which honors its sacrificial martyrs called civilized and another a fanatical, violent, barbarian culture?” Throughout history those facing a far stronger invader, knew that “resistance has included sacrificing one’s life in the course of inflicting the highest number of casualties on the enemy.” Zionists won’t tell you “Jesus is among the revered prophets of Islam”, desecrating him “is forbidden by the Qur’an” and thus is “abhorrent to the thought of Muslims.” When Israelis or US media calls anyone a terrorist that is supposed to mean they have “no redeeming features” and thus “worthy of physical extermination.” If you use force to fight your colonizer, you are a hero but to your colonizer you are naught but a terrorist. So, when India, Morocco, or Israel tortures, rapes or murders its occupied people (Kashmir, Western Sahara, Gaza or West Bank) they get a free pass, because it’s strangely only considered terrorism when those w/o power fight back. When a US or IDF soldier rapes someone, they are just “letting off steam”. Terrorism is what THEY do and never what you do. And so, the IDF can rape, torture, and murder civilians every day (even boldly post it on Instagram) and it will never be called terrorism.
Only 29% of US Jews are “active promoters of Israel”; that fact alone shows you the power of the Israel Lobby in the US. Thus, the Lobby and AIPAC’s claim to speak for “all” Jews is “false and a misrepresentation.” Intimidation remains the chief tool for keeping dissenting Jews from speaking out. This was a great book. I’m really glad I read it, and you will be too.
This was written back in 2006 when there was little media attention of Israeli lobby groups influence of US middle eastern strategy. Reading it nearly 15 years on, it appears to have been very accurate in its grasp of the power Israel has over pointless strategies (for the US and allies) and the ongoing prosecution of war in the middle east. My only issues with the book is the one-sidedness of the writings and the pushing of a wider socialist solution to resolve these conflicts, rather than addressing the United States issues regarding lobby group power. However, overall this is a very enlightening and well researched book.

It’s almost as if this book didn’t receive a final edit. There are a lot of missing commas, periods, semi-colons, etc. The sentence structures oftentimes didn’t make much sense and could be confusing.
It’s also decidedly one sided. I completely understand and agree with the point of view: the Israel Lobby has entirely too much power and what Israel is doing to the Palestinians and other nations in the middle east is absolutely unacceptable. This book is like how I talk to my close friends about it—scathing and angry. But that tone doesn’t really have a place in “nonfiction” writing. I think the author would have benefited from being less obvious about which side they are on and instead just present the evidence(which proves their side, anyways).
I would hesitate to recommend this book to anyone—because anyone just getting into the issue would see how one sided the writing is and be turned off from the book, or hesitate to view it as information as completely factual(even if it is).
I don't really have much of an opinion on this book. Mainly because Petras comes off as a terrible writer. Yes, the Israel lobby is one of the most powerful lobbies in the country, but this book leaves you feeling that the Israel Lobby is the ONLY lobby that shapes American foreign policy and any such view should be held with great suspicion. However, I do agree with Petras that Chomsky tends to dismiss the Lobby's significance.
The problem with this book is that it is written with too much passion. Petras leaves himself very vulnerable to attacks of anti-semitism (even if this is not the case). The facts should have been presented in a much more toned down and academic manner. Also, from an aesthetic standpoint, the layout sucks. It is written like a newspaper article with bold excerpts of the text set apart from the main body every few pages.
I just found this book through a friend. I have the translated edition. I hope it presents something new. I do not like the translation. Thanx God I found the original book.
